Snow in the Sierras

Do you think that Mother Nature has any more surprises for us in the next few months?

Sitting on the sofa watching a big snowflake swerving in circles, and then a slight breeze sending it back up into the black sky until the snowflake starts down again, is enjoyable to watch from the inside of a warm cabin in California’s small community of Cold Springs.

It’s the first time in many months that snow has touched the ground in California.

It has been cold up here in the Sierras, but not cold enough to make snow, except in the northern part of the Sierras where the temperature turned cold enough two weeks ago to make man made snow, so that the northern Sierra ski resorts could open.

About two weeks later the weather changed, and the first real snow from nature arrived and dropped about a foot of it. This natural snow, plus the man made snow was enough to open many of the ski runs near Lake Tahoe for skiing.

Nature does this every year. It drops its first natural snow near the holiday of Thanksgiving, and then the ski resorts have enough snow to ski on until the Christmas season.

Many years it doesn’t snow again until February, and then nature makes it snow for several weeks straight until there is enough snow to fill the mountains until August.

About twenty years ago, it was different. Winter weather would set in around the last part of September and continue until May or the beginning of June. Could this be one of nature's changes because of the warming we are having?

It seems like nature has a way of cleaning its woods, forest, and its air from smoke and impurities like it did with the first rain of the winter season.

Do you think that nature has any more surprises for us in the coming months?
