Smearing Attorney General William Barr Part of a Long-term Strategy

It’s an attempt to blunt any future findings embarrassing – or worse – for Democrats regarding the now-discredited Russian collusion narrative.

Forget the box office juggernaut that is “Avengers: Endgame.” To see the setup of a real life – as opposed to reel life – endgame, look no further than the Democrats’ hyperbolic attacks on Attorney General William Barr over the release of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report looking into allegations of illegal conspiracy between the Donald Trump presidential campaign and Russia.

Marvel Studios’ most recent box office smash is the culmination of 21 previous movies over a span of 11 years. Democrats’ endgame plan is only in its embryonic stage and entails attacking the messenger who transmitted the report that found no criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia. In piling on Barr, Democrats are looking far beyond the short-term damage done by the dead-and-buried Russian collusion story they hyped for years. But more on that later.

Even now, congressional Democrats are considering holding Barr in contempt of Congress for not cooperating with a subpoena for an unredacted copy of Mueller’s report.

Further rankling Democrats is the fact Barr refused to testify before the House Judiciary Committee about Mueller’s investigation because of a dispute about how he would be questioned. Of course, Barr previously spent several hours testifying on the very same topic before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

And then there was a letter Mueller wrote to Barr in late March, reportedly objecting to the way the attorney general characterized his report in a four-page summary delivered to Congress on March 24.

Predictably, Democrats used all this to accuse Barr of engaging in a sinister cover-up on the president’s behalf.

It’s all sound and fury, signifying nothing. Barr was under no legal obligation to make the Mueller report public, and yet he did make a lightly-redacted version of the report available to the people in the span of a few weeks.

Furthermore, Barr has made a less-redacted version of the report available to members of the judiciary committees of both chambers of Congress. But Democrats continue pretending they can’t see it in order to promulgate the appearance of a nefarious cover-up.

The story of Mueller’s letter to Barr has been nothing more than, ironically, the media creating a mountain out of a molehill. According to a Justice Department spokesperson: “After the attorney general received special counsel Mueller’s letter, he called him to discuss it. In a cordial and professional conversation, the special counsel emphasized that nothing in the attorney general’s March 24 letter was inaccurate or misleading. But, he expressed frustration over the lack of context and the resulting media coverage regarding the special counsel’s obstruction analysis.”

So, what is the endgame for Democrats? Demonize Barr by giving the misleading impression he’s corrupt, in order to discredit any possible future findings by his office of shenanigans or even legal impropriety related to how the Russian collusion narrative and investigation got started. As a certain Marvel cinematic super-villain has observed, maybe the (political) universe does need balance.
