Slavery Reparations: The Left's Latest Effort to Divide America Along Racial Lines

We can address the real problems afflicting the black community, such as incarceration rates and the prevalence of single-parent households, without reference to a practice that was eradicated over 150 years ago for which nobody living today is responsible.

For many decades, Democrats have established their agenda to provide help to those less fortunate in society through the use of government funding. Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are examples of programs that advance their agenda. However, in recent times and in addition to this agenda, Democrats have been using government influence to help stoke division between minority groups and white Americans.

This is accomplished in a variety of ways: from invoking the term “hate speech” at the slightest provocation to downplaying the use of violence by radical-Left organizations such as Antifa and Black Lives Matter, to the de-platforming of television and social media personalities for not abiding by the rules of political correctness, etc.

The Left’s latest initiative to attain its perceived vision of social justice is to pass a bill that funds reparations for slavery - a practice that was abolished over 150 years ago. It’s hard to understand how reparations for slavery today can have any positive impact on mitigating the injustice inflicted upon slaves, especially after the political effort that was expended over the course of an entire century after the Civil War towards the pursuit of equal rights and freedom for all Americans. If anybody has a rational argument that explains the necessity of this bill, I’d love to hear it.

In reality, it seems to me that this is yet another invocation of identity politics by the Left to posture themselves as champions of the minority community against the privileged white elite. The success of this strategy depends on the implicit group-think of certain tribes. In this case, the Left is depending on the unity of the black community in opposition to what is largely a strawman today - racist whites who resent the success of the black community and would profit from its demise.

Consequently, there’s nothing that the Left hates more than the outspoken black man who defies the norms of group-think by speaking out against the Left’s pandering to the black community and its invocation of the bigotry of low expectations expressed towards black people. As such, the bravery of black writer Coleman Hughes in testifying against slavery reparations in front of the House Judiciary Committee cannot be overstated.

Against a background of jeers and taunts from a largely black crowd throughout his speech, Hughes made lucid arguments against the proposed bill, saying that it doesn’t address the contemporary problems that black people face, that it makes people victims who haven’t asked to be victims, and that it’s insulting to put a price on the suffering of slaves that occurred in the 19th century.

We need more black Americans, such as Coleman Hughes, to counteract the Left’s insanity when it comes to its obsession with tribal opposition on the basis of group identity. Otherwise, there will never be a time in which we can come together as a nation to heal some of the real ailments afflicting the black community today.
