Skateboarding Has Its Own Terminology

A skateboarder does the same thing as a doctor, a lawyer or a football player.

Watch it, here he comes. A little pressure on the back of his skateboard with his left foot, up he goes onto the cement step. His skateboard glides across the cement like it’s on a sheet of smooth ice. He gives a little push with his left foot on the cement and goes a little faster, so he can get off the step onto the pavement. He sails cross the the pavement like a sailboat on smooth water.

Throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, there are many different types of skate parks, where skateboarders can safely practice their skills. These skate parks keeps many skateboarders off the city streets and sidewalks.

Skate parks are designed for the skateboarders to perfect their sport by having different obstacles that they practice getting on or across. In talking to a skateboarder, who frequently uses the skate park in Fremont, California, says, "It’s a fun park because there are different obstacles that I can practice my skills on."

"I love this skate park because it’s clean and well taken care of." He went on to explain that one skateboarder teaches a skill to another, and that you don’t have to pay an instructor for that lesson.

Even more interesting, skateboarding has its own terminology like any other sport or profession. When you talk to a skateboarder about skateboarding, they start to use skateboarding terminology, which is hard to understand. It seems like the terminology relates to skills that you learn when using the board.

When you see a skateboarder practicing the skills, their is doing the same thing that a lawyer, teacher, football player or doctor does - learn the terminology of the sport or the profession they are in.

The next time you see a skateboarder fly pass you, give them respect as you would a doctor, football player or lawyer. Remember, they had to learn skills just like other professionals.
