Should Park Rangers Carry Weapons?

Should they have a way to protect themselves and other people too?

Park Rangers in San Jose, CA do not carry guns, which is something that has come up at city meetings.

Since the park ranger takes the same type of training that other rangers do, they should be allow to carry. If there is a  problem requiring the law, San Jose city police will ride with the ranger, and if an arrest has to be made, the officer will make the arrest.

The problem with this is, what should a park ranger do when he’s working at a event and, for some reason, shooting starts? The Ranger is a law enforcement officer at this event, he should have some way to protect himself and other people.

Rangers at parks have several types of responsibilities: they work at maintenance; law enforcement; park administration; search and rescue; and as guides. We know that law enforcement should carry weapons, but should the other rangers carry weapon too? This is the question that the San Jose City council has to figure out.

Or should the park rangers that don’t work in law enforcement only carry weapons in their vehicle in case they need it?

Just remember, many times, these rangers are working by themselves in a desolate area, where help can be many miles and several hours away—shouldn't they have a way to protect themselves and other people too?
