Stormy and Kathy have stories to tell for those who like to snoop. They might have had a payday, but the NDA said "no way." So, they chatted up Anderson Coop.
Stormy Daniels and Kathy McDougal, bless their hearts, were having alleged flings with a very rich, very married man. They didn't expect him to become President of the United States. Then again, neither did he.
This humble scribe has waited impatiently for two full weeks to see this 60 Minutes interview, which makes one feel a little seedy. This tell-all from Stormy Daniels had been percolating ever since The Wall Street Journal blew the story open in January. After two months, she sat down with Anderson Cooper, TV's new father confessor. Daniels' attorney, Michael Avenatti, set it up brilliantly when he went on Morning Joe on March 16 and announced that somebody had threatened his client.
So, did it pay off?
There weren't any bombshells to speak of. That part was a bust. But Daniels was honest, up front, seemingly fearless and not holding back. In a nutshell, she claims a one night stand with Trump, who was holding out a possible spot on Celebrity Apprentice for her. "I have no reason to lie," she told Cooper, which makes some sense.
What she's really wound up about is her reputation. That's an easy one to scoff at. Once you've bared all to make a living doing things on film that most people can't even mention out loud, you have to wonder. But, as she pointed out, she earned her way in a "legitimate and legal" profession. Can't argue with that.
Legal is a key word here. Not the legality of her career, but the laws of campaign finance. Ultimately, it isn’t about porn films or who slept with whom. That doesn't affect the fate of the republic. Election laws do. Trevor Potter, former chairman of the Federal Election Commission, told Cooper he believes that the payments and their timing with the election might amount to political hanky panky. That makes this something more than a tawdry tale of sex and power. Potter sets it up as a sure enough violation of the campaign finance laws.
But fear not, sensitive reader. There was a creepy moment, as one has come to expect by this point in the administration. "He was like, 'Wow, you — you are special. You remind me of my daughter," Daniels said. And then he slept with her? Seriously?
Overall, the porn star did a better job than the 1996 Playmate of the Year.
Wow. Never thought I'd write a line like that.
Cooper's CNN interview with Karen McDougal was so ... underwhelming? She described months-long affair with a kind and loving Trump. That one's hard to swallow. In the end, McDougal came away looking like a love-struck teenager. Her 15 seconds will probably be mercifully brief. AMI should let her out of the contract so she can turn her tale into a Harlequin romance.
Daniels and McDougal told diametrically different stories. Who was most likely closer to the truth? Based on Trump's smarmy history, the smart money is on Daniels. Time will tell.
This is the first time Daniels will appear on national television since the story broke. Stormy Daniels, the adult film...
