Saying Goodbye

We received a text message that a close friend had moved into an assistant living home.

We have friends who we grew up with that are in their eighties, or older, that cannot take care of themselves and need help.

We received a text message that a very close friend was moved into an assistant living home to be taken care of because one of his organs is giving out, and the doctors have tried everything that they could to prevent it from happening. We went to the home that his children said that he will be living in from now on.

I thought from all the bad stories and the homes that I have visited it would be a nice place but not much to do, and the caregivers would be nice but overworked and provide minimal care. But to our surprise, the home has been in the area from 1959 and was renovated. The inside looks very modern with modern equipment—as an example, when we entered my friend’s room, he was sitting in a big chair watching television, trying to figure out the TV’s hand control. As soon as he saw us, he turned the tv off and was trying to level the big reclining chair that he was sitting in, which was almost as big as his bed.

We saw places where you are served meals that are ordered by your doctor; there are places where you can pick up snacks during the day; a place where you can get a haircut; and areas where you can sit and watch TV, or just sit and talk; and a room for physical therapy—these rooms are easy to get to when it’s time to eat or when there is a function of some sort.

This facility was the best I’ve seen. It's clean, easy to get around, plenty of activity, and since it is a Jewish home there is a built in synagogue that has services on Friday and Saturday.

In talking to several people who have been living there for several months, they said it’s a very nice place for people who have to go to a retirement home to live.

(Three days after we visited him, we received word that he died in his sleep.)
