Say It Ain't So, O!

Obama is to be paid $400K for making a speech to Wall Street. Ugh.

Call me old-fashioned, but I think everybody trying to cash in after their stint in public service is very tacky indeed.

And with the Trumps, they aren't even waiting.

A while back I wrote a piece called "Cashing In," prompted by a story about Melania Trump suing someone for messing with her ability to make money as one of the world's most photographed women.

Here's that posting, here: https://thelatest.com/tlt/2435

So this rant is completely non-partisan.

I don't like it when the Democrats do it; I don't like it when the Republicans do it.

Hillary Clinton's taking all that money for her speeches to Wall Street surely cost her votes.

I know I found it to be a huge turnoff.

Bill Clinton, I guess, didn't care.  He was home free, having made it through two terms.

Nixon and Reagan had their California friends who helped out from time to time.

It seems like the two Bushes were able to contain themselves.  I don't recall much about Jimmy Carter taking money for speeches.

I used to live in Kansas City, Missouri, where the people are still so very proud of Harry Truman, who swore he'd never take a penny in an attempt to cash in on his office once he left the White House.  And he didn't.

But times have surely changed.  Everyone's on the take, it seems.

There are all the former congressmen and senators who become lobbyists.  Michael Flynn got money from Russia; Paul Manafort from the Ukraine.  And then there are the books.

What ever happened to public service for its own sake?

I remember a while back saying this was one reason I admired Obama -- he seemed to play it straight, there were no scandals during his presidency, he didn't fool around.

When contrasting him with Hillary Clinton just before the election, trying to explain why I couldn't warm up to Hillary, I predicted Obama would never give expensive speeches to Wall Street, he was just too classy a guy.

Say it ain't so, O.
