The novel ‘Rumi’s Daughter' by Muriel Maufroy is a very impactful, knowledgeable, and educational read. Filled with Sufi mysticism and spirituality, ‘Rumi’s Daughter’ is the kind of novel that holds the power to change the reader’s perspective on life. I know, because it changed mine.
Book Summary and Review
The story of Rumi’s Daughter by Muriel Maufroy, revolves around a girl named Kimya. She resides in the rural area of heer country. After being sent to live in Rumi’s house, who is known to be amongst the most spiritual poets in history, Kimya’s life changed forever. Kimya possessed mystic powers and spiritual tendencies as well. However, she did not know how to use them to her fullest extent.
Living under the same roof with Rumi, she had the opportunity to broaden her educational horizons and gain knowledge regarding spirituality. After falling in love with Shams, Kimya realizes that her husband, Shams, possesses a great longing for God. Despite loving him profoundly, Kimya’s heart ached, and her soul grieved when she realized that her husband would never feel the same way towards her. She was stuck in a love triangle between her, Shams, and God. She knew it was wrong of her to compare herself to God. However, she couldn’t help but wonder how it’d feel to be loved by Shams, just for one day, like the way he loves God. Shams and Kimya had a unique marriage.
Kimya had a deep love for Shams and her father, Rumi, who adopted her. It is a story about love, loss, heartbreak, mysticism, and spirituality. In Rumi’s Daughter, Kimya’s’ story is told with such tenderness, serenity, charm, and calmness that the reader can’t help but feel their heart warm-up at the sheer innocence and beauty of the protagonist’s love for Shams. Being a thought-provoking tale, Rumi’s Daughter is extremely well-written and is promised to pull unto the strings of your heart.
What I learned from Rumi’s Daughter by Muriel Maufroy
One of the most crucial contrivances learned from Rumi’s Daughter is that nothing in this life lasts forever. We might believe that the people in our life right now, the people we love with every ounce of our hearts, would stay by our side for eternity. However, that rarely happens in the story of Kimya’s longing for something or someone.
I learned how to make beauty from my pain and also that no love is as pure as the love of God. It has taught me to appreciate the gifts of God and to cherish those closest to my heart. This book helped me look deep within myself, get to know my soul better, and to contemplate over the pain residing in my heart, because every period of grief we go through has something to teach us.
