Rudy Forgets Where He Came From

The rule of law is the bedrock of democracy. By becoming a shill for Trump, Giuliani ignores his roots and ruins his reputation forever.

In order to form a more perfect union, it is not coincidence that our Founding Fathers said first that we must “establish justice.” That came before the need to “insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.”

The Founding Fathers knew what Donald Trump and his newly minted lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, fail to recognize; that without justice established by the rule of law, the other “blessings” have no meaning.

A former United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Giuliani had the audacity to proclaim that the duly executed search warrants on Michael Cohen’s office and home, conducted under Court order by FBI agents, were “big storm troopers coming in and breaking down his [Cohen’s] apartment and breaking down his office,” evoking images of the Nazi raids of Jewish homes and businesses in the 1930s.

No, Mr. Giuliani, the so-called "raids" were conducted pursuant to law and in a very professional, unobtrusive manner, according to Michael Cohen’s own words.  Storm troopers they were not. Only Mr. Trump, your valued client, characterizes them so repulsively.

Apparently Giuliani has forgotten what he said at the United Nations following the 9/11 attacks: “On one side is democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human life; on the other, it's tyranny, arbitrary executions, and mass murder. We're right and they're wrong. It's as simple as that.”

Yes, it is as simple as that.  Mr. Giuliani, you were the mayor of a great city at a desperate time.  You stood for the rule of law then, and as a United States Attorney before that, and as a young lawyer fresh with your law school ideals before that.

Yet by becoming a shill, by demeaning the FBI, by being complicit in the face of lies, you render yourself a buffoon.  It’s shameful that you disparage what is most sacred in our democracy, and with it your reputation.
