Republicans Call Biden’s Education Proposal “Divisive”

If Republican senators are against teaching the truth about American history, of which slavery played a massive role, because they fear the truth will create division, then the issue is not Biden’s proposal, but the U.S.’s history.

When it comes to history, the American education system does not provide a well-rounded or even truthful education. When I started taking college courses, I constantly found myself shocked at what I learned about American History. Each time, I wondered why I hadn’t learned of these things before attending college.

It became clear to me that American history had been being re-written so that America would be presented in a good light. Although, one has to wonder, why? Why would there be a need for America to clean up its history…unless, of course, its history was dark and dirty?

Recently, President Biden proposed his education plan to teach more Black history in schools. This would include teaching more about slavery and its influence as a central element in the U.S. However, on April 21st, Republicans requested that Biden withdraw his proposal, calling it ‘divisive.’

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel stated that Biden’s proposal would lead education toward a “politicized and divisive agenda” focused on the U.S.’s flaws. In a letter to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, Republican Senators stated that young Americans “need to understand both our successes and our failures”; that Biden’s proposal would take away from teaching about the successes and contributions of the Black community.

The interesting word here is ‘divisive.’ If Republican senators are against teaching the truth about American history because they fear the truth will create division, then the issue is not Biden’s proposal, but the U.S.’s history.

Furthermore, if anyone in a position of power supports re-writing history, then you can be sure that there is a reason for it. Frankly put, opposing the teaching of your own country’s history – to willfully keep American youths ignorant of their own country’s history – is a clear sign of oppression.

Furthermore, opposing the expansion of Black history education is simply racist. Opposing Biden’s plan, Republicans made it clear that they intend to silence black voices. With the rise in racially-motivated crimes, and the general unrest and chaos that has occurred in the last decade, it is clear that racism needs to be addressed.

Education on the subject (when it started, how it was perpetuated, why it still continues), while not an immediate fix, is a good idea as understanding the issue is the first step in fixing it. Biden’s plan, perfect or no, is at least a step in the right direction.

Simply put, supporting laws that suppress history, so that a significant number of citizens are left in the dark as to the truth of America’s troublesome past, ensures that nothing is done about it. If people forget or simply do not know of the crimes and atrocities that have shaped America today, then it will never change.

The senators opposing Biden’s proposal do not care about America’s youth, or any of its citizens. Rather, they are interested in maintaining the status quo because they are the ones benefitting from it.
