Remedial Science for Donald Trump and the GOP

Donald Trump and an astounding amount of his fellow Conservatives often confuse the weather with the climate. They would do better knowing the distinctions between the two, or they can admit that it's more beneficial for them to ignore it.

If there's one thing Donald Trump loves to do, it's spread misinformation. A few of his greatest hits involve false or misleading statements regarding climate change, the science behind it and false equivalencies to weather.

Trump also loves to shame or insult people whenever he gets the chance. Incredibly, that link I just provided lists 551 people, places and things Trump has insulted on Twitter as of January 2016. This doesn't include all of the nicknames he's given, former Cabinet members he's derided, news anchors and fellow politicians he's taken cheap shots at, etc. since then.

One of the problems with people like Trump though, is that when you enjoy publicly insulting someone and you have itchy Twitter fingers, there's a good chance that you'll be quick to say something that you'll eventually have to walk back. However, Donald Trump isn't really the type to apologize or admit wrongdoing, so his foolish and erroneous statements are  a matter of public record permanently.

A perfect marriage of the above coincides with a recent tweet directed at Senator Amy Klobuchar. Klobuchar announced her candidacy for president on Sunday, speaking in Minneapolis during snowfall and freezing temperatures. Among many other issues addressed in her speech, Klobuchar emphasized the importance of going green, fighting climate change and rejoining the Paris Accord from which Trump withdrew in 2017.

Naturally, Trump attempted to "take her down" by referencing weather conditions, but if you have a basic understanding of science, then it's hard not to shake your head at what he's saying.

As a quick aside, another thing Trump wears on his sleeve is his perceived intelligence. It's almost infuriating considering how smart Donald Trump thinks he is. I would say that growing up cartoonishly wealthy, never having to work hard, being surrounded by yes-men and the like would make someone of average intelligence think they're smart, but delving into that is an entirely different story. We can just let Trump tell you how smart he is himself and how he's an expert in pretty much any field you can imagine -- you know, like most geniuses do.

What Trump and numerous other GOP politicians and talking heads continue to do is confuse/conflate weather with climate. Just a few weeks ago, Trump jokingly tweeted that we needed global warming because it was going to be cold. It was hilarious.

Conservatives do this all the time. It's either that they are willfully ignorant, unwilling to learn, and/or unable to comprehend the science behind climate change, or they really don't care about future generations and are just interested in making their money from oil and gas corporations. As I've said before, the latter would make sense if you're a politician, but not if you're an average person.
