Random Thoughts on Tiktok

Tiktok is somewhat of a social media phenomenon, and I've got a lot to say about it.

Tiktok: the new social media platform captivating kids and adults alike. What is it about Tiktok that makes it so addicting? It could be the algorithm some users dub "too specific." Or, it could be the 15-second videos perfectly timed to keep the viewer scrolling and scrolling and scrolling. But, I think the thing that keeps users coming back is the fact that fame is just in reach. With a single video, users can wake up to millions of likes.

For some, there's no rhyme or reason. It’s just the luck of the algorithm. While this can be frustrating to those trying to grow their social media platform, it’s appealing to others. On Tiktok, fame is somewhat of a lottery.

Another big part of Tiktok is the comments. Some users might argue that the comments make the video. On other social media platforms, at least in my experience, comment sections are usually boring. It's mostly users tagging their friends or saying things like "Lol" or "Cute." Tiktok is a different story. Comments usually have me laughing out loud. I have even been known to send my friend a TikTok solely for the comment section. People have conversations, make jokes and interact with each other in a way that I have not seen on any other social media platform.

Believe it or not, Tiktok is also very educational. Don't get me wrong, I know it's not reliable in any way, shape, or form. But, it does introduce me to things I never would have known about. Through Tiktok I’ve been introduced to manifestation, investing techniques and college admissions advice. I've also been taught more simple things from Tiktok, like how to make Bella Hadid’s insanely good pasta, a way to make my own rings, and even got some calculus help one time. Tiktok surprises me every time I go on it.

But, on a more serious note, Tiktok helps me feel less alone, especially now. I don't know how the algorithm knows, but somehow it shows me people who are just like me. In a time where most of my hours are spent alone, this helps me feel a little more connected to the world, my generation, and even myself sometimes. If you still  "don’t get the hype" about Tiktok (a Tiktok phrase,) I recommend you download it anyway. However, if you get addicted after 15 minutes, don't say I didn't warn you.
