Random Thoughts About 2020

Inspired by THE LATEST's fellow writer Brett Davis, here are my two cents on the passing scene in 2020.

First and foremost, 2020 has made me realize that, when push comes to shove (sometimes literally), nothing is more important to Americans than toilet paper. Maybe that epitomizes just how strange and disturbing 2020 has been.

Ironically, however, I never had an issue finding flushable wipes on the shelves, which do a much better job. I think many Americans need to educate themselves about this truth.

I love how creatively people wear their masks. Variations include the "chin mask," the "neckwarmer," the one-ear "dangler," and the one I don -- the "wadded up in my pocket."

Are face-nudists morally responsible for the death toll of Covid-19? Or are viral outbreaks and their adverse effects inevitable consequences of living in an interconnected cosmopolitan society?

How did wearing less and exposing oneself become marks of conservatism rather than liberalism?

I wrote last week about the untrustworthiness of our institutions. Did anyone really believe that nationwide lockdowns were more beneficial than harmful to society? Did anyone really believe the polls when they gave Biden double-digit leads in states like Minnesota and Wisconsin? Did anyone really believe that experimenting with police-free autonomous zones in major cities was a good idea? Anyone who believed in these ideas and the institutions that promoted them was simply not employing common sense.

As if a major pandemic isn't debilitating enough for the sports world, the infusion of racial politics onto our professional basketball courts and football stadiums is perhaps even more troubling.

I really hope the Washington Football Team wins the Super Bowl so that the cream of idiocy rises to the top and taints Super Bowl history with the spineless PC garbage that has come to plague the NFL. The 88-year legacy of the Redskins and their iconic logo have been tossed in the trash in the name of racial justice.

The killings of George Floyd and Jacob Blake unleashed the fury of the Black Lives Matter movement and led to nationwide civil unrest; yet BLM’s motivating premise – that Black people are disproportionately killed by the police because of racism – is a false one, as it doesn’t take into account the number of encounters that Black people have with the police and their disproportionate contribution to violent crime.

I love watching Ted Cruz rip Jack Dorsey to shreds about Twitter's active assault on free speech in a decidedly partisan manner. Cruz is the intellectual and ideological leader of the Republican Party and deserves to be the next Republican candidate for president.

Kudos to Elon Musk and the SpaceX team for multiple successes in transporting astronauts to the ISS with reusable rockets -- by far the most uplifting story of 2020. During a time of intense polarization and division, it was heartwarming to see Walmart employees embracing Target employees as they entered the ISS.

As upside-down of a year as 2020 has been, I look forward to seeing how 2021 doubles down on the pandemic of lunacy that has infected America thus far.
