Random Thoughts: 2022 Winter Olympics Edition

Random thoughts on the passing scene from the now-concluded 24th Winter Games in Beijing.

The fact China – an authoritarian regime responsible for unleashing the COVID-19 plague on the world – hosted the 2022 Winter Olympics is a sign the world is not serious about holding the Sino menace to account for its many misdeeds.

When all of this sucking up to China vis-à-vis the Winter Olympics and beyond backfires on America and the West – and it will – it will be instructive to watch all of the backpedaling by the current crop of Sino sycophants. Useful idiots, indeed.

The mostly-empty venues – due to COVID-19 – at various events made the Winter Olympics even more dull than usual.

That, plus the walled-off nature of the event and the crackdown on free speech by the Chinese government gave a real dystopian feel to this year’s Winter Games, which is pretty much the polar opposite of the Olympic Games’ alleged goal of bringing nations together through athletic competition.

The most interesting thing about the 2022 Winter Olympics: flamboyant former figure skater and current television commentator Johnny Weir’s outrageously slammin’ outfits and gravity-defying hair.

Once again, the Winter Olympics tried to make curling – a contest where someone slides what looks like a futuristic Sharper Image waffle iron along the ice while some other poor sap feverishly sweeps in front of the advancing waffle iron for some reason – seem cool. Tried.

Eileen Gu and other Americans who competed at the Winter Games for China should have to exchange any medals won for 30 pieces of silver.

The women’s figure skating final contained more drama than a soap opera during sweeps week.

Russian figure skating coach Eteri Tutberidz makes "The Great Santini" look like Leo Buscaglia. Her berating of 15-year-old skater Kamila Valieva for her stumbling performance under the weight of a drug scandal that saw her finish in fourth place was colder than a Siberian winter.

It almost makes one long for the good ol' days of 1994, when Jeff Gillooly, then-husband to Tonya Harding, masterminded a Detroit attack on her skating rival, Nancy Kerrigan, in an attempt to knock Kerrigan out of the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.

Tara Lipinski apologizing for allegedly misgendering nonbinary American pairs figure skater Timothy LeDuc is peak woke stupidity on display at the Winter Olympics. In fact, Lipinski used accurate pronouns – he and him –  in describing LeDuc in that LeDuc is obviously an adult male human being.

Reports are China plans to turn the Shougan Big Air ski jump structure into a very large water slide. Name suggestion: The Chinese Water Torture.

The colorful, energetic closing ceremony of these Winter Olympics stood in stark contrast to the sequestered, sterile nature of an event already hampered by geopolitical tensions.

If television ratings are any indication, Americans much prefer to watch the Super Bowl than the Winter Olympics.
