Random thoughts on the passing scene.

Say what you will about President Trump, but his appearance at this year’s Daytona 500 demonstrated the man knows how to make an entrance. He is a master of the art of political theater.

For years Democrats peddled the notion – now-discredited – that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia and that the president himself was a stooge for Vladimir Putin. And yet the presumptive frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for president of the United States is Bernie Sanders, a man with a well-documented history of being a useful idiot for Russia back when it was the Soviet Union.

President Trump is orange, but that’s better than red like Bernie Sanders.

The other shoe finally dropped on "creepy porn lawyer" and erstwhile Democratic presidential contender Michael Avenatti. It turned out to be a Nike.

Attorney General William Barr can’t win with his Democratic critics. On the one hand, Democrats have characterized Barr as a toady for President Trump. And yet the recent public spat between Barr and Trump over the president’s tweets regarding the sentencing of Roger Stone was discounted by Democrats as politically-engineered drama for public consumption.

U.S. Department of Agriculture data indicate some 6.1 million people are off of food stamps since February 2017. That’s welcome news in that less dependence on government is a good thing.

NASA reports Voyager 2 – approximately 11.5 billion miles from Earth – is back online after unexpectedly shutting down for unknown reasons. There is no truth to the rumor that officials got the interstellar space probe back in working order by simply turning it off and back on.

Speaking of space, scientists say the giant star known as Betelgeuse might explode soon. Of course, being nearly 643 light-years from Earth, the massive astronomical body might have already blown up, and we just don’t know it yet.

Fading political star Joe Biden hasn’t looked good recently on the campaign trail. In an interview with Univision’s Jorge Ramos, former Democratic presidential frontrunner Joey Gaffes tried to explain away the double standard related to the holding of migrant youngsters in cages engaged in by both the Obama and Trump administrations – and failed miserably. Still, it was a pleasant surprise that Ramos was grilling a Democrat for a change.

Republicans, conservatives and other supporters of President Trump acting as if it’s a fait accompli that Trump will be re-elected might want to reconsider. While that’s certainly possible, perhaps even probable at this point, there is nothing inevitable about voters returning him to the White House. The Trump campaign and its allies should take nothing for granted. A presidential election that is some nine months away is an eternity in politics that could see a reversal of fortunes. Just ask Hillary Clinton.

This article epitomizes essentially defining all functions of government as socialism so as to avoid having to defend the indefensible: what socialism actually is, including its unbroken record of failure throughout history and around the world.
