Quarantine Birthdays

Birthdays are a little bit different this year.

Several friends and family members have celebrated birthdays already during this pandemic, and it's been a totally different experience than in past years. I commiserated with them, agreeing that birthdays this year were just going to be kind of a bummer.

This last week though, I celebrated a birthday and entered my 26th year while in quarantine!

There were many reasons things felt different this time around, the most obvious being the pandemic and subsequent quarantining and lack of socialization. It also felt a little less important this year; with everything going on in the world it felt a little trivial and small.

This is not to say that I didn't celebrate my birthday, because I most definitely did! My boyfriend made me a delicious breakfast that morning and gave me two plants for our balcony, a book, and a pair of earrings. We both had work that day, but we managed to get things done by lunchtime. We went to a local bakery and picked up some sweet pastry treats to have after dinner. For dinner we picked up a dozen raw oysters, and some lobster rolls from a local restaurant, and a bottle of ice cold rosé of course!

In contrast to years past, I didn't see any friends or family, stay up until two in the morning, or wake up with a hangover the next day. It was relaxing and wonderful, and I actually appreciated the different type of celebration.

I think it's easy to feel down and unexcited about birthdays this year, but it can also make you appreciate the little things. I felt gratitude for my apartment, my boyfriend, and the ability to get the perfect dinner.

We sat out on our balcony that night, sipping wine, listening to music, and talking. It was not the most exciting birthday, but I know that it was what was necessary this year.

Who knows, maybe I'll get to make up for the lack of excitement next year!
