Prime Time Trump

The President Invades Prime Time Television to act.

In case you missed it, Trump is desperate to build his promised wall. He has even told the country he would be willing to shutdown our government for years. Trump even went as far as to deliver a Prime-Time speech during the time slot as the latest episode of Black-ish. Instead of laughing as Anthony Anderson cracked us up, we got to see an old crackup laugh in the face of America. Despite the third longest government shutdown growing closer to that number two spot, he refused to show honest sympathy for those hurt by this wall, and instead indirectly showed that his desire to win was greater than his desire to help.

If we are to review the speech and the standard is Trump, then Prime-Time Trump earned an “A-” because he used a teleprompter. We all know the man is not well-spoken, but that teleprompter sure helped me pretend he was. The man once made fun of President Obama for using a teleprompter, but I think it is very obvious to the nation after the past two years just how important those devices are.

I think Trump even had a speech writer, because I could follow what he was saying. All nine minutes were dedicated to fear-mongering and Democrat bashing. Sure, Trump made it seem at times as if he were seeking his wall to help the American people, but we all know this isn’t a vacuum and his sincerity just isn’t true.

The wall does not stop drug smuggling nor illegal immigration as he would have you believe. The wall is impractical and too expensive for the level of threat associated with the southern border. Yet, Trump jumped back from years of tearing others apart with angry words to pretend the wall was nothing more than a symbol of love he wants to share with us. The facts and circumstances around this speech sing to a different song.

The government has now been shut down for a day short of three weeks, because the President wants to fulfill a campaign promise that is certainly going to break him with his base if he does not come through.

In order to push at our amygdalas and pump the cortisol into Americans, Trump asked, “How much more American blood must we shed before Congress does its job?” Trump drove home the point that the drug epidemic and debt paid by legal citizens because of illegal immigration were a result of not having a wall on the southern border. He stayed away from name calling, impressions and self gloating, to instead ask Americans to call their Congress members and make clear their desire for a wall.

Thankfully, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Chuck Schumer came to the tail end of the speech and identified the truth. “President Trump must stop holding the American people hostage, must stop manufacturing a crisis and must reopen the government,” Ms. Pelosi said.
