Pretend Passion for the Constitution

Democrats cloak their nakedly partisan impeachment campaign in sanctimonious posturing.

Rep. Adam Schiff, chair of the House Intelligence Committee and point person in Democrats’ efforts to remove President Trump from office, would have us believe it really hurts him and other members of his political party to pursue impeachment, but if they didn’t do so they would be shirking their oath and duty to the country.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi previously parroted a similar woe is me line in claiming there is “no cause for any joy” in impeachment and calling it a “sad time for our country.” She even went so far as to say she prays for the president regularly.

This patina of Democratic reluctance to impeach Trump, of course, is all for show. It’s 100 percent Kabuki political theater in a sad attempt to disguise the fact Democrats still haven’t come to grips with the fact Trump defeated Hillary Clinton at the ballot box in November 2016 in one of the greatest electoral upsets of all time.

We know this because Democrats and others have been fantasizing about removing Trump from office even before he became the GOP presidential nominee! Impeachment talk ramped up in the time between Trump winning the election and his inauguration. In an admirable display of restraint, Democrats waited a whole 19 minutes after Trump took the oath of office to announce the course of impeachment.

Furthermore, the actual case Democrats finally settled on for impeaching Trump is weak sauce, as evidenced by the moving of goalposts and the kangaroo court-like proceedings so far.

Even Democrats seem to realize their notion of a quid pro quo between Trump and the president of Ukraine as an impeachable offense is anticlimactic, at the very least, especially in light of Democrats’ debunked claims of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. Perhaps that explains why top House Democrats released a statement way back on September 25 saying “no quid pro quo is required to betray our country.” That is stunning in that the alleged quid pro quo was initially trumpeted by Democrats as the raison d'etre for the need to impeach Trump!

Add to that the Ukrainian government being unaware Trump was withholding military aid, the Ukrainian president publicly declaring Trump didn’t pressure him and the whistleblower report turning out to be third-hand gossip rather than first-hand information, and it’s easy to understand why Democrats are pursuing impeachment the way they are. Democrats’ vendetta against Trump for the crime of winning the presidency three years ago is the only real explanation for an investigation of a U.S. president sanctioned only by members of the opposition party, including legalizing the near dictatorial powers of Rep. Adam Schiff, the allegedly hesitant inquisitor.

This impeachment process isn’t Democrats solemnly doing their due diligence in fealty to the Constitution for love of country; it’s sectarian politics at its worst carried out by a group of sore losers.
