Please Just Wear the Mask

We've been at this a while, haven't we?

As we near Covid’s first birthday, and continue to celebrate months upon months of quarantine, I think it’s important that we take a moment to remember that we are not out of the woods yet. Despite the fact that it’s a new year, and that we’re finally making moves in distributing a vaccine, the coronavirus has not, surprisingly, gotten bored and called it quits. Just as surprising, other people getting the vaccine does not vicariously endow you with immunity.

Upwards of 79,000 people died from Covid-19 in January alone — what a way to kick off the new year. And yet despite this, we’re seeing mask-mandates being lifted across the country. This is not over. We are not safe.

As someone who works in the service industry, this has not been easy. I’m lucky enough to work in a place that requires masks for entry, but despite the literal dozen signs posted on the front door and the walls that say those exact words, a disconcerting number of customers waltz in without them, and even more attempt to dispute the requirements. Not one week of this quarantine has yet to go by where security hasn’t had to escort violently argumentative customers out of the store. Not one week has gone by without death threats made to me and my coworkers over a piece of fabric.

The bars downtown have been reopened for months, and every weekend they’re packed to bursting from the evening into the early AM. The people who come into my store have every excuse at their fingertips, from medical-exemptions to long-winded conspiracy theories that, at the end of the day, don’t matter to me or any of the staff. It is not our job to debate your opinions on Covid-19. It is not our job to tell you that, if you have a legitimate medical reason for not wearing a mask, then you shouldn’t be going out to bars anyway. That you have money and the desire to spend it at my store means nothing if you aren’t willing to follow the rules.

This all sounds a bit cynical, and to be honest, living in a college town during quarantine has skewed my view just a bit. I know people are going to ignore the advice to stay at home. I know people are going to go through the pandemic without getting sick, or suffering any personal losses, and feel validated in thinking everything was blown out of proportion. I know people sometimes just don’t listen. I’m past trying to change opinions, all I want you to do is wear a mask for the five minutes we have to put up with each other.
