People Need to Stop Discrediting the BLM Movement

Phrases such as “all lives matter” and “blue lives matter” suppress the black voices trying to be heard during this time.

For centuries, black lives have been oppressed in this country and now people are trying to silence their voices during this crucial time when reform is needed. By using phrases such as “all lives matter” and “blue lives matter” it adds to the censoring of this movement and what it is truly about.

In particular, “all lives matter” is one refutation that people most commonly use against the movement. The people who are in support of BLM are aware that all lives matter but, when it comes to police brutality all lives aren’t in as much stake as black lives. While it is possible for anyone to be a victim of police brutality, black lives are disproportionately more at risk.

People also tend to talk about how more white people are killed by police than black people. There are more white people in America than black people so this is true, however, black people are almost three times more likely to be killed by cops. This inequality exists due to the history that associates black people with criminality

By saying “all lives matter” one is telling black people that they refuse to see the inequality in the country or you refuse to do anything about the inequality in the country. All lives are not currently facing systemic racism and oppression, black lives are. “All lives matter” is truly only said to dismiss the centuries of the suffering of black people.

“Blue lives matter” is the newest argument against the movement due to increased support in defunding the police, but blue lives don’t exist! A cop isn’t born a cop, it’s a job that one chooses. A person isn’t oppressed by their job choice.

Cops stop being cops when they take off their badge, black people can’t stop being black. “Blue lives matter” is just a mockery attempt of an actual, valuable movement. The only time “blue lives matter” should be used is when the Smurfs are being chased by Gargamel, not during an anti-racist movement.

Black lives matter is truly about fighting for equality in this country. People aren’t trying to put black lives as the superior race, because there shouldn’t be a superior race in any country. Black lives matter is about reforming a bastardized policing system that was built on oppressing black people. Black Lives Matter is about getting justice for the black lives that have been killed by police and to put an end to qualified immunity for cops.

To conclude, black lives do matter and they will continue to matter until there is a change in this country; and when people attempt to refute the movement, they are adding to the racism against black people that this country was built on.
