Patreon's Purge "One of the Most Important Speech Wars of Our Time"

Like Ayatollah Khomeni's 1989 fatwa against "The Satanic Verses," Patreon's purge of "Sargon of Akkad" for "hate speech" marks a tipping point for freedom of speech on the internet, revealing the totalitarian objectives of the censors. Dissident YouTubers must be protected by President Trump, just as Margaret Thatcher protected Salman Rushdie.

On January 1st, 2019, YouTube celebrities Jordan Peterson and Dave Rubin announced they were leaving Patreon because the payment-processor banned classical liberal YouTuber Sargon of Akkad in December.

This followed atheist neuroscientist Sam Harris's December 17th tweet which concluded Patreon persecuted political dissidents:

"While the company insists that each was in violation of its terms of service, these recent expulsions seem more readily explained by political bias. Although I don’t share the politics of the banned members, I consider it no longer tenable to expose any  part of my podcast funding to the whims of Patreon’s 'Trust and Safety' committee."

Brittany Pettibone, Lauren Southern, James Allsup and Milo Yiannopoulos are some of other high-profile banned YouTubers, which led Breitbart.com's Allum Bokhari to charge "the right is being banned from online fundraising."

British author Douglas Murray dubbed it "Patreon's Purge" and called it "one of the most important speech wars of our time."

The totalitarian roots of "de-platforming" must be confronted. Winning an intellectual debate won't stop it because the internet censorship struggle is over power rather than persuasion.

Peterson mused: "...one of the things that I can't fathom, in some sense, is the lack of imagination on the part of the people who are engaging in censorship of what they regard as hate speech...there's an old military adage which is that if you invent a weapon it will be used by your enemy within 15 years. OK so why what makes the people on the left--because they're the ones who are doing this--well, as you can clearly see in the Change the Terms website, what makes them so sure that exactly the same tactics won't be used against them, like at the drop of a hat, once the tactics have been validated and put in place?"

They can be sure, because they know they are totalitarians--and their opponents are not. They are willing to seize control by "any means necessary."

For that same reason Russian Cadets couldn't stop Bolsheviks, Weimar Liberals couldn't stop Nazis, Chinese Nationalists couldn't crush Maoists, Iranian moderates couldn't stop the Ayatollah, and George W. Bush couldn't prevent 9/11.

They failed to understand their enemies.

Stalin, Hitler, Mao and the Ayatollah never had to face similar tactics to theirs, because their opponents were normal human beings--not fanatical psychopaths bent on totalitarian domination that crushed all opposition--as Peterson must realize from his own studies of the Soviet Gulag.

The totalitarian objectives behind the Patreon Purge and "de-platforming" of political opponents cannot be reasoned away, as Jamie Glazov points out in The Jihadist Psychopath.

They must be decisively defeated as Nazis, Communists, and their ilk were defeated--by containment, confrontation, and determination by government.

Margaret Thatcher mobilized the British nation to protect Salman Rushdie from the Ayatollah's fatwa against the offensive Satanic Verses.

Her actions should be an inspiration for President Trump to protect today's internet dissidents from the fatwas of Social Justice Warriors.
