Parkland Gets Closer To Arming Teachers

A significant body of legislation is undergoing review in Florida, originating from a site of school shooting tragedy.

Almost one year ago, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida became the site of an infamous school shooting. Following the tragedy, proposals were floated suggesting teachers be armed, to prevent similar future events. The idea gathered supporters and dissenters across the country, but the news cycle shortly dropped the idea of legislation coming to fruition.

But in Parkland, the idea has been resurfaced, and may finally be implemented. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission, tasked with investigating the school massacre, has reevaluated President Trump's earlier proposal. Critical of the response of school staff and the Broward County Sheriff's Office during the ordeal, the commission unanimously approved the release of a preliminary report, which details the findings of it's investigation of school shooting events like that at Stoneman Douglas and provides recommendations to prevent similar events, and has sent it to the governor's office and the state Legislature for further review.

What's perhaps most interesting in this story is not only how close legislation is, but the source of the proposal. At the beginning of this debate the usual characters made their appearances: the NRA, politicians, celebrities, activists, victims, and incensed Internet readers all gave their opinions for or against the idea. But the report here comes from a new group, formed by law enforcement, for the single goal of preventing school shootings. There isn't a profit motive to lie about their findings, and such findings have even led them to criticize their founders.

If we as a nation want an unbiased review of the problem, this appears to be as close as we've gotten. And fortunately, with any luck, it may help us get better armed, safer schools.
