Our Long National Nightmare is Over – For Now

Democrats’ clumsy, partisan attempt to remove President Trump from office has failed.

The headline is a reference to something President Gerald Ford said during his swearing-in ceremony speech after assuming the presidency in the aftermath of Richard Nixon’s resignation of the presidency over the Watergate scandal. And yet it’s an appropriate reference now that the Senate has finally – mercifully – failed to convict President Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Had Nixon not quit, he likely would have been impeached by the House, convicted by the Senate and removed from office over efforts to cover up the burglary at the Watergate Hotel. That’s in stark contrast to Democrats’ efforts to get rid of President Trump based on little more than their unrelenting contempt for the president.

Democrats’ emotion-based attempt to expel Trump from the presidency over his phone call with the president of Ukraine was their ad hoc impeachment Plan B after special counsel Robert Mueller’s report deep-sixed the Russian collusion narrative Democrats had feverishly hoped would be the basis for ousting Trump.

We know this because of the amateur-hour, slipshod fashion in which Democrats pursued impeachment: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi got impeachment started not with a full vote of the House, but via fiat at a press conference.

Democrats refused GOP witness requests in the Intelligence Committee. Democrats denied Republicans a hearing day in the Judiciary Committee. Democrats rushed the debate and vote on two articles of impeachment; articles which failed to include any mention of a “quid pro quo” or “bribery,” allegedly the very reasons for impeachment!

Democrats’ hurried process was then undermined by Pelosi’s failure to transmit the articles of impeachment to the Senate for more than 30 days in a vain effort to gain leverage over how the trial would be conducted.

The behavior of Democrats during the Senate trial was no better. Lead House impeachment manager Adam Schiff – his last two brain cells apparently dying in a tragic murder-suicide – invoked  a reverse “Seward’s Folly” of sorts in claiming a failure by the Senate to convict Trump on the vague abuse of power charge could mean Trump giving Alaska to Russia for that nation supporting his re-election bid.

Clearly, Schiff and others of his ilk are not serious people when it comes to the allegedly solemn duty of impeaching a president of the United States of America.  That much is certain considering members of the Javert/Lavrentiy Beria wing of the Democrat Party are contemplating serial impeachment of Trump. It’s a perverse talking-past-the-sale notion that would require the president to be re-elected, which would obviously make it that much more difficult to impeach him again.

Disturbingly, weaponizing impeachment may be the new normal resulting from this factional upheaval. It’s axiomatic that revolutions eat their own. Democrats seem to have forgotten that. They may be reminded in jarring fashion when it is they who are about to be devoured by the very nightmare of a monster they have created.
