Oregon is on Track to Elect First Republican Governor in 40 years

The polling data and betting odds now favorite the Republican candidate.

For the first time since 1982, the state of Oregon is on the verge of electing a Republican to the governorship. The Republican candidate Christine Drazan has a three-point lead in the Real Clear Politics polling average against Democrat Tina Kotek in the bid to succeed term-limited incumbent Democrat Governor Kate Brown.

There is also an Independent candidate who is receiving double-digit support in the polls. Former state senator Betsy Johnson, who was a Democrat while in office, has significant support as an Independent third-party candidate. Her relatively high support in the polls is a major factor in cutting into Democrat Kotek’s share of liberal support. Johnson is running the kind of campaign a traditional Democrat would run, whereas Kotek is running a far-left radical campaign that is being perceived as tone-deaf on the issue of crime.

Given that crime is now a top issue for voters in Oregon and nationwide, the conditions are favorable for the state to break its 40-year Democrat winning streak at the governor level. Kotek’s campaign is focusing on issues that are only appealing to a far-left base. Her hyper-focus on abortion and climate change while ignoring inflation and the crime wave is limiting her ability to win any voters beyond the far left. This is setting up an environment where Oregon elects a Republican who is campaigning on the top issues in the state.

The Republican Drazan has focused on the spike in crime in Portland. Her ads have been showing the lining of tents in Oregon’s largest city and pointing out that her opponents in the race have ignored Portland’s issues for years. She has not taken the bait from Kotek to give any attention to Donald Trump or the issue of abortion. The economy and public safety, which are top issues, remain at the center of Drazan’s focus.

Nike co-founder Phil Knight has made it his mission to prevent Democrat Tina Kotek from winning the Oregon governorship. He has donated millions to the campaigns of both the Independent Betsy Johnson and the Republican Christine Drazan. This comes as the majority-liberal electorate in the state has grown tired of the recent far-left trend and is becoming more eager for a more moderate shift. Knight is quoted in the New York Times as saying, “One of the political cartoons after our legislative session had a person snorting cocaine out of a mountain of white. It said, ‘Which of these is illegal in Oregon?’ And the answer was the plastic straw."

Republican Governor of Virginia Glenn Youngkin is also campaigning for Drazan as well as many other Republicans in tight gubernatorial races. Youngkin’s masterful campaigning skills are the blueprint for Republicans running in liberal-leaning states like Oregon. Campaigning on the issues that voters are most concerned about without trying to pander to any specific group is a recipe for victory.
