There is nothing wrong with our system of government, so get out there and vote.

As we are approaching the mid-term election this year, I know I have been writing against the completely corrupt two parties, the less-than-stellar press efforts and the incivility that both sides and foreign powers interested in our demise have been encouraging, but one thing I will never write against is an informed electorate being encouraged to vote.

Recently many on the right have been disparaging Alec Baldwin for telling people to overthrow the government. Yes, he did say that, by voting. That is what voting can be all about. Change.

The screamers and the mobs that are professing the end of the world if their side doesn’t get elected need to chill out. People on the left thought Bush would be the end of the world and people on the right thought Obama would be the end of the world and guess what? It wasn’t, and neither will Trump if we collectively keep it together and vote instead of scream, vote instead of disturbing dinners, vote instead of chant lock whoever Trump hates this week up, and vote instead of falling into any other incivility traps.

Do I wish we had better independent candidates and voters that would stand up and say no to stupidity and greed especially within their own party and give independent candidates a chance? Of course, but I am happy to be in a country where we can always hope for better candidates next time around. The system with all its imperfections works, so stop complaining about the electoral college or how the Senate is formulated. The founders took all of this into account when they designed the government.

Hillary Clinton lost the election because she ran a badly complacent campaign that relied on celebrities and the assumption that she was destined to win, not because of the electoral college. Lincoln didn’t win the popular vote and I hear some think he was a pretty good president what with saving the union and all. We need to stop knee jerk reactions to individuals in office at any given time. Trump will pass without the need to try and tinker with a system that works.

So here are my suggestions for this upcoming election and all future elections. First, read and listen, especially to those you disagree with. If you love Trump, switch over to CNN sometimes and read the NY Times. If you hate Trump, watch Fox News sometimes. Avoid social media under all circumstances for any kind of reliable news. Facebook is for keeping up with friends and their pets and what they had for dinner. Avoid using news apps, the ones that quickly figure out what your opinions are and then serve you only “news” that reinforces those opinions.

Next, try and relax. Show civility to all your fellow citizens and when you don’t like what they stand for go out and vote in every single election at every level because you will make a difference in the long run.
