OnlyFans: Pioneering a Nude Frontier

The future of pornography and free-market capitalism intersect at OnlyFans as many young, ambitious individuals are bearing it all for a chance at a piece of the pie, but are there repercussions for their lewd revenue stream?

The depths and expanses of human, sexual fantasy are astronomical. What is considered "sexual" and what is considered "fantasy" are each such subjective words. The cumulative amount of "sexual fantasies" our minds have created can be as mind-blowing as pondering how many grains of sand there are on Earth. Along for the ride with our gutter minds comes a demand to see and/or experience erotic exhibitions similar to the ones we imagine with hopes to satiate or satisfy our inner desires. The Playboy magazines and peep shows of old gave way to the world of internet porn, and from internet porn, the world of fantasy has brought us OnlyFans.

If OnlyFans is new to you, don't be alarmed. It's relatively young; having been launched just four years ago. Founded in the UK in 2016 by "Porntrepreneur" Tim Stokely, OnlyFans generally functions like most other pornographic websites as you pay for a subscription fee to access libraries of sexual photos, videos, and even live-streamed sex acts performed mostly by professional sex workers (or "Porn Stars"). The unique features that OnlyFans provides are more personal interactions between the model and the subscriber. Subscribers can personally message models, request pictures or video for an extra fee, and they can even leave tips. The most controversial market that OnlyFans has managed to dominate is turning everyday, casual girls (and guys) into profiteering sex workers for a network of strangers.

Some argue that OnlyFans has become a pornographic social media page. There's a news feed just like Facebook, a messaging option, and the group of "fans" are the equivalent of friends or followers. Social media has already proven to be a place of great controversy and the point of origin for many scary stories of stalking, kidnapping, pedophilia, etc. Parents and law enforcement already have so many dangerous things and people to protect children from. It might only be a matter of time before someone's underage daughter is found posting to OnlyFans posing as a woman of age.

It appears that OnlyFans has already started rendering some real-world consequences for pandering to the fantasizing curiosity of unfamiliar strangers. Kristin Elise, a now-former cheerleader of the Indianapolis Colts was fired after nude photos she had posted to OnlyFans surfaced on Reddit. Elise, who has numerous video clips of herself scantily-clad across sports cars and one lingerie photoshoot with her hands over what appears to be a Bible, says she is "heartbroken" about being fired.

Whether or not she or anyone else is surprised about the reprisal Elise received for her unprofessional behavior, what may be surprising is what reprisals have come to and how common they could be in the future. Elise reminds us in today's competitive world, keeping our jobs means we must also keep our pants on if we want to be filmed stretching across a Porsche. I hope I can resist the urge.
