No More Fireworks?

The battle between tradition and technology hits the sky.

Invented by the Chinese in the early 9th century to ward off evil spirits, fireworks have been the staple for major celebrations ever since. Whether to start off a new year (Chinese or regular) with a bang, to commemorate an annual event or to gather in the streets to bring in a fresh leader, government or ceasefire, fireworks have brought a sense of joy, wonderment and escape to humankind as a whole for over 1200 years. Few things bring us such awe, such a sense of togetherness, such a feeling of "it's going to be alright." Especially for free.

Apparently, that's not good enough for us anymore.

This summer, Intel broke the Guinness World Record for the biggest drone light show ever produced in honor of their 50th anniversary. That's fine, and it was quite the spectacle, even viewed via online video. But with 2019 peeking out from a few winter clouds around the corner, I can only hope that the droneworks don't become the de rigueur.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the synchronized technology to get the LED lights to perform in perfect choreography, and I'm not an old school for the sake of being old school.

It's just that hearing that unmistakable whistle of a gunpowdered rocket shooting up from the ground -- not knowing where up there it will explode its colors -- and hearing the popcorn in God's microwave going off... well that just can't be replaced by silent flying robots, the same ones that are killing in the name of all over the globe. Especially with that canned EDM crap music providing the soundtrack

It can't be that far away when we have an app on our phone where we can customize and order our own droneworks show, flown right to the comfort of our backyards. Think of it, that way we don't have to worry about parking, sneaking concocted libations into public parks or, heaven forbid, socializing with others.

So let's pick up where the Chinese started and use the fireworks to ward off that evil technology. Besides, isn't it nice to still have something popped out on the streets beside gunfire?
