NHL Playoff Predictions

My call for the first round of the NHL Playoffs. Bet on these predictions.

Well, it's that time of year again, the second season of the NHL which lasts almost as long as the regular season (I miss the old best of 3 and 5 series, but money is money, I guess). Below are my bold and uninformed predictions for the winners of the first round. I do not claim to be an expert, just a lifelong fan and former player, but you could do worse than trusting my prognostications:

EASTERN CONFERENCE:

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. New Jersey Devils -

The Devils surprised a lot of people this year and Taylor Hall had a breakout year, but Tampa is too deep in scoring and too big on defense for New Jersey to have a chance. Plus, a playoff healthy Stamkos has something to prove. TAMPA in 6

Boston Bruins vs. Toronto Maple Leafs -

Toronto is emerging as a force to be reckoned with in future seasons with a great young corp and solid goaltending. However, the Bruins loaded up at the trade deadline and look very strong. The only factor that could shift this series is the health of the Bruins. BOSTON in 6

Pittsbugh Penguins vs. Phildelphia Flyers -

Ahh, the Pennsylvanian rivalry. While I can't see the Penguins repeating, they will go deep and the Flyers were lucky to scrape in. PITTSBURGH in 5

Washington Capitals vs. Columbus Blue Jackets -

Is this the year the Capitals can finally make a run? Nope. Same lineup as the past that just doesn't seem to have the mental toughness for a serious playoff run. Plus, Torts built a solid, hard-working team. COLUMBUS in 7

WESTERN CONFERENCE:

Is this the year that the West is finally the best?

Nashville Predators vs. Colorado Avalanche -

Like the Devils, the Avs surprised a lot of hockey folk this year and have one of the best (and underrated) players in the game, Nathan McKinnon. But Nashville's playoff experience is too much to overcome. NASHVILLE in 5

Winnipeg Jets vs. Minnesota Wild -

The series to watch in the West. Winnipeg is poised to go deep, probably meeting the Preds in the Conference Final, if they can get past the Wild. WINNIPEG in 7

Las Vegas Golden Knights vs. Los Angeles Kings -

Everyone took the Knights too lightly until is was too late. Not gonna happen in the playoffs. LOS ANGELES in 5

Anaheim Ducks vs. San Jose Sharks -

How much longer can these California grey beards keep making playoff runs? This series will be an outright war, and both teams will beat each other up too much to have any gas left in the tank for the next round. A toss up, but I'm going with Getzlaf. ANAHEIM in 7

So there you have it. See you next round.
