Music Saved My Life

I believe that everyone in this world has something that helped them get through the challenging moments in their lives. For some people, it was art, while for others, it was love. For me, it was music that helped give me hope for a better tomorrow. It made me realize that if I suffer today, it will not be the same way forever. Music was my solace.

When you are a teenager, you find fascination in every significant thing. Whether it is a cute boy in your chemistry class or a TV show you discovered on Netflix. Teenagers tend to feel things at a much more profound level than adults. As a child, I was never the ‘loud-one’ or the ‘party animal.’ I was the wallflower—a person who liked observing people from afar. With my headphones plugged in, I’d watch strangers pass by, reading their eyes and studying their lips. I bought my first music player in fourth grade. Borrowing mp3 songs from my classmates, I’d often stay up past midnight listening to the melodious tunes of 90s singers and boybands. From Katy Perry to One Direction, I downloaded every singer’s songs.

Fast forward to high school; songs became a distraction, a contrivance I’d listen to block out the negative thoughts in my head. Amidst the negative hormonal changes of my teen years, music helped me fight the battle of depression when I was bullied. Of course, every shy kid is bullied at least once in their life. In my case, I was bullied for four consecutive years. It wasn’t the hitting or the pushing me across the hallway. They’d stare at me from head to toe and mock my appearance, as though I was a hoax to be despised. When I was drowning in a sea of sorrow and grief, music saved me. The lyrics of a song told me what I needed to hear.

A song by Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick, its lines I'd never forget;

‘You with the sad eyes,

Don’t be discouraged,

Oh, I realized, it’s hard to take courage,

In a world full of people,

You can lose sight of it all,

The darkness inside you,

Can make you feel so small,

I see your true colors shining through,

I see your true colors,

And that’s why I love you.’

Whenever I’d have a hard day at school or a tough night at work, I’d listen to this song to calm the raging storm of sadness in my soul. In the war of life, music was like calm to all of my chaos. I believe that everyone in this world has something that helped them get through the challenging moments in their lives. For some people, it was art, while for others, it was love. For me, it was music that helped give me hope for a better tomorrow. It made me realize that if I suffer today, it will not be the same way forever. Music was my solace.

The lyrics of my favorite songs have been engraved on my heart. And if you are going through a difficult time in your life, I urge you to find your solace, no matter what it might be. I found mine, and it saved me. What will your solace be?
