Muddled Messaging on COVID-19 Vaccines

Government is undermining the notion of inoculating the population against coronavirus that it previously touted as a way to end the pandemic and get back to normal.

The State is “…the very opponent and negation of human freedom and individuality. Men strive to excel, the State seeks after averages. Men covet novelty, the State extrapolates from yesterday. Men love to chaffer person to person, the State is a rule book. Men yearn to be free, the State is the sum of liberties lost.”

Those words penned by William F. Rickenbacker came to mind upon recently viewing ubiquitous electronic signage along Interstate 5 here in the Pacific Northwest — as in other parts of the nation, no doubt — that reads, “Vaccinated or not please mask up.”

Said signage, of course, is a reference to the now widely-available (in America) vaccines to COVID-19, the virus from Wuhan, China, that has bedeviled the world over the last year or so, claiming some 3 million lives in the process.

Not that you would know game-changing vaccines are a reality, given government’s messaging has not substantively changed regarding wearing facemasks, engaging in social distancing and avoiding large crowds.

Confusing communications from a totally risk-averse state — not known for intelligent decisions and flexibility in the first place — give the erroneous impression vaccines are ineffective, which is ironic in that it was the federal government’s Operation Warp Speed that helped accelerate vaccine development and mitigate risk.

Nevertheless, in word and deed, government’s post-vaccine response has done nothing to engender confidence in life-saving vaccines. Consider the recent undercutting of the pro-vaccination narrative by government.

Fully vaccinated President Biden and fully vaccinated Vice President Harris each wore two — two! —masks while greeting Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga at the White House last week.

The Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control halted the Johnson & Johnson vaccine based on six confirmed cases of blood clotting — out of nearly 7 million shots administered.

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, during a briefing, became emotional in warning of “impending doom” amid fears of a fourth wave of COVID-19.

Government, already hamstrung by confusion in the clumsy initial rollout of vaccines, has done itself no favors in combatting vaccine hesitancy promoted by the Luddite anti-vaxxer crowd’s embrace of conspiracy theory narratives and scientific ignorance.

This is important because the only way to achieve herd immunity is to get a large majority of the population immune to the virus either through antibodies from being infected by it or by being vaccinated against it.

To be sure, vaccines don’t mean an instantaneous return to normalcy, and government should not pretend that’s the case.  Coming out of the pandemic obviously takes time.

Nor should government be resistant to the long-term good news of vaccines with its lacking-in-perspective and play-it-too-safe narrative that compromises the effectiveness of vaccines, perhaps unintentionally giving credence to fears of accumulated powers that could emerge as totalitarianism in a more severe crisis.
