Juniper, cared for by human companion Jessika Coker, is a smiling, snaggle-toothed banner for standing up against fur farms, educating people on exotic pets and providing unwanted animals with sanctuary.

I first found Juniper’s story through a simple, adorable image: a fox and a dog, side by side on a bed, looking like a happily married couple.

The dog was Moose, a huggable Australian Shepherd and Malamute mix. The fox, of course, was Juniper.

Juniper is a North American Red Fox, descended from animals held in captivity for the purposes of fur farming. Because of this, she was bred to be tamer than the average fox and could never return to the wild. So, when she needed a home at five weeks old, Jessika Coker stepped in.

Along with bringing people the joy of seeing a cute fox flirt with a dog, Jessika used social media to promote education. Now with over two million followers, Juniper’s Instagram has become a fantastic platform for information about domestic foxes and the horrors of the fur industry.

Jessika never shies away from the difficult sides of being a fox mom. She posts pictures of bite marks on her hands and the destruction to her house. On her website, she describes the smell of a fox as “skunk and ammonia,” noting that visitors to her home “can smell Juniper as soon as you pull into my driveway on humid days.”

She encourages people to take appropriate steps in learning about domestic foxes before rescuing them. (Note the wording: rescuing, not adopting. Jessika does not promote having foxes as pets, lest they end up abandoned in rescues or worse.) There are numerous things an average person might not know about caring for these creatures, such as the need for taurine in their diets.

Last summer, Juniper got another fox friend: Fig! Fig was another fur farm rescue. Due to a bacterial infection, he’d lost his right foot, some of his back toes and his left eye. With a little help from a prosthetic – preventing him from putting too much weight directly on a bone – he’s running around, happy as can be.

With so many animals (I haven’t even covered her cats, crawlies, sugar gliders…) to care for, Jessika is looking into buying a plot of land and starting up an exotic animal sanctuary. Sales from her Fox Shop go toward realizing that dream.

Between eating socks, snuggling with Moose, raising Fig and posing for pictures, Juniper just might be the "Most Interesting Fox in the World."

Follow Juniper’s adventures to learn more about fur farms and the roller coaster of adventure that is owning an exotic animal. Or, at the very least, just enjoy the cute pictures.

Juniper is releasing a book! Pre-order here.
