The multi-talented Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen will pair up for a new Amazon Prime series 'Forever' that debuted Friday, September 14. The comics will star as a married couple struggling with life's ups and downs.
Good news is on the way—Amazon has released a new series Forever starring Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen. I’m excited about the pairing of Rudolph and Armisen who portray a married couple facing challenges in their union. Casting got it right. The two worked together for years on Saturday Night Live.
Both actors are originals and have that intangible ‘it’ quality that a successful actor often has. ‘It’ is a charisma, an unidentifiable aura entertainers have. You're intrigued by them and drawn to them like flies to honey -- can’t take your eyes off them.
The first time I saw Maya Rudolph was on Saturday Night Live where she was a cast member in the early days from 2000 until 2007. Her look and delivery were unusual; special. Rudolph was always funny and engaging. Her perfect timing and physical comedy could be compared to the extraordinary Carol Burnett.
I only learned recently that Rudolph is the daughter of the late ethereal and gifted singer Minnie Riperton and husband songwriter and music publisher Richard Rudolph. Those of us who are old enough cannot forget the haunting ‘Lovin’ You’ from April 1975 that soared to the top of the charts.
In fact, Rudolph began her career in the mid-1990s as a member of the alternative rock band The Rentals. She later branched out into improv comedy and the rest is history. Rudolph has continued to act in major motion pictures like 50 First Dates and Bridesmaids and lends her voice to the animated blockbuster Shrek; among others.
Rudolph’s on screen TV husband Fred Armisen will play Oscar to her June. Armisen is also one of these characters you can’t forget. I enjoyed his work on Saturday Night Live from 2002-2013. He has a deadpan quality that could be likened to Bob Newhart—that ‘blah’ persona that is so uncool it actually becomes cool.
That’s the delivery Armisen employs on Portlandia, the widely successful IFC sketch comedy series he co-writes and produces. If that’s not enough, Armisen is also the bandleader for the The 8G Band, the Late Night with Seth Meyers house band. Although Rudolph and Armisen have an arsenal of talents, they've both had to struggle in their lives.
Rudolph was the product of a bi-racial marriage and even on Saturday Night Live, sadly, says she felt the sting of racism and was made fun of for her hair by white castmates on ‘Saturday Night Live’. Armisen struggled with sex addiction and the break up of his marriage to award winning actress Elisabeth Moss.
Not too much is being revealed about the plot of Forever. However, it is a story about the struggles along with the ups and downs of marriage. What will likely make the show a hit is that Rudolph and Armisen are so relatable. They seem like regular and vulnerable folks any of us could sit down and have a cup of coffee with.
