Mainstream Media’s Bias Against President Trump Undeniable in Age of Coronavirus

The fourth estate’s alleged news reporting on the White House’s response to the pandemic is barely-disguised opinion journalism: Orange Man Bad.

The COVID-19 pandemic — aka novel coronavirus — has brought a lot of things into sharper focus in America, including the awful state of journalism. The mainstream media as a whole fancies itself as a fair and balanced information gatekeeper whose members play things right down the middle. The sad truth is that many — most? — journalists are besotted with their own liberal ideology, and are no longer able to recognize their own bias.

Nowhere is this more obvious than in how the press covers President Trump and his administration's handling of the ongoing national health crisis. To be sure, Trump is not and should not be above criticism; everything the man says and does is not sacrosanct. There are legitimate negative judgements to be made regarding certain aspects of Trump's response to coronavirus.

That being said, there is no excuse for the shoddy journalism on display regarding Trump's recent off-the-cuff remarks based on previous conversations the president had with experts regarding possible treatments for coronavirus. Naturally, the press couldn't be bothered to keep its displeasure with the president focused on something constructive and sensible by noting maybe the leader of the free world shouldn't be spit-balling in a clunky way on topics outside his wheelhouse.

Instead we got a news cycle with various headlines proclaiming the president of the United States recommended people inject themselves with disinfectant as a treatment for coronavirus, when he said no such thing, along with the suspect and predictable follow-up stories on bleach-drinking being on the rise because of Trump's remarks.

This is but the latest example of the media failing to ground its criticism of Trump in reality in favor of breathless and hyperbolic coverage based on deliberately misinterpreting the president's remarks in the worst, most ridiculous possible way.

Other examples from the recent past are many, including Trump's hopeful musings on re-opening the economy by Easter being hysterically reported as Trump ignoring advice from medical and infectious disease experts in being hell-bent on setting Easter as a date-certain for re-opening the economy. Easter came and went without any federal recommendations for easing social distancing guidelines and shelter-in-place orders. Easter also came and went with little to no introspection from reporters.

And who could forget the case of Trump expressing optimism over an anti-malarial drug as a possible coronavirus treatment? Naturally, the media translated that as Trump shamelessly pimping said drug as a coronavirus cure-all, even going so far as to blame the president for the death of an Arizona man fed fish-tank cleaner by his wife … who is now under investigation for the murder of her better half. Again, there has been no soul-searching done by a soulless press corps.

Sad to say, but at this point the myopic mainstream media has lost so much credibility it couldn't look a cyclops in the eye.
