A new gadget in development can save your smartphone if it falls.

We can put a man on the moon, but we can't create a smartphone that's indestructible!

This is something I'm fond of saying.

It's like the old joke about the airplane.  The airplane gets into a terrible, horrific accident.  No one survives.  They recover the black box that contains all the flight data.  It's in perfect shape.

Why didn't they make the airplane out of the same material as the black box!?

Or, in my case, why don't they make a cellphone out of that material?

That would be nice.  Especially with my track record when it comes to these devices, which is long and brutal.  I'll share one story with you (I have a ton, but this one is good.)  So here it is.  This was not too long ago, back in the day when flip-phones were all the rage.  Okay, maybe this was a long time ago, but whatever, the point here is that I owned one and I was so, so cool.  I think my hair was parted down the middle and spiky, can you picture this?  Anyway, this ridiculously expensive cellphone was ultra-fancy.  It barely connected to internet, but man, it had a camera, and that was amazing.

Anyway, soon after getting this phone and showing it off to everyone, and soon after getting used to all the great features, I dropped it.  When I did, it was like dropping a few hundred dollar bills off a cliff.  At least that's the way I felt anyway.  The screen not only cracked, but came off along with the top part of the phone.  I don't know if I can really describe this to you.  Try to picture a flip-phone, but without the flip.  I had the keypad without the rest of the phone.

Well, amazingly the phone still worked.  How?  With the help of the speakerphone!

It looked like something from Star Trek.

I used it like this for weeks...and yes, people found this amusing.

So, all this brings me to this article.  Philip Frenzel is a student at Aalen University and he has developed a case for smartphones that will protect it when it falls.  It's a smart case, or at least, that's what I'm calling it.  If your phone drops to the ground, right before it hits, these spider-like arms pop out of the case cushioning the phone and even allow it to bounce safely to a stop.

How cool is that?

I know that nowadays there are other phone cases out there that do an incredible job protecting our phones, but I think this one may have them all beat.  Of course, it is still being developed, but it's those little spider-like arms that set this one apart.  The case also gives support for wireless charging and it features an extra battery.  According to the information, a Kickstarter fund is being developed.

I wonder how much it will cost to get these spider-like arms on the airplanes?
