A mother continues her self-discovery through acceptance and travel.

“To travel is to take a journey into yourself.” This is a famous quote by my childhood love, Danny Kaye. I delighted in his humor and it helped me through challenging times. As a child I traveled some with my parents, but traveled much more through books. As an adult I do quite a bit of armchair travel, which is fun and educational yet isn’t quite as marvelous as the real thing.

The real thing is a corporeal-spiritual experience with a richness that comes alive through the senses. My next trip is in 14 days. My daughter and I will be flying together, but I will return alone. She will stay to begin her college life, a privilege I’m grateful she will experience. This is a wonderful opportunity and time of thriving on her life path. I believe I, too, will experience a time of personal growth and discovery.

I have thoroughly enjoyed being a mother, it has been a marvelous journey in relationship with another person where our only purpose was to love each other. I became a better person as I awakened and matured through my mothering education. My daughter and I have loved traveling together but this time is different; she is an adult. Now she flies on her own wings. Traveling home alone, I will spread my own wings as I plunge into the unknown.

Preparation is a large part of the traveling pleasure, and this time is just the same. I have started a new part time job teaching swimming to children and young adults with developmental, physical, sensory and movement challenges. I am diving into my writing career and will do another round of de-cluttering and removing things from my home that are no longer needed. I will add volunteer hours to my schedule, be of service to my community and put time in mediation and discovery.

The journey to knowing oneself is a gift of being alive. We are here to share that vibrancy and love with one another. In travel we have the opportunity to deepen our relationship with ourselves and others. I will say Goodbye to my daughter and her childhood and a wild heartfelt hello to her future and mine. She and I will continue to travel, sometimes together and always side by side as adults in this life journey.
