Libraries—Have You Read About Them Lately?

Libraries are more than just a place for books. Learn about what all they offer and how they might help you with your next project, whether it’s redecorating your home, starting a small business or learning a new language.

Remember those old, dark buildings that smelled like dust and had an old lady glaring at you to make sure you didn’t rip a page out of a book? Personally, I don’t. The libraries I’ve heard about are a distant history to me.

I know libraries to be warm, friendly and contemporary, and as a worker at one, I have plenty of first-hand experience. They offer more than just books (DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, video games, etc.) and have plenty of community services for everyone (advice for small businesses, genealogy resources and programs about everything from cooking to technology). And no, you don’t always have to whisper.

While not all libraries may have changed with the times, most have been developing their collections and services to keep up with the customer. Recently, because of the closing of many branches due to COVID-19, libraries have been expanding their online contents. Wide varieties of e-books, magazines, music and movies are available to download. To no one’s surprise, last year had some of the highest rates for digital downloads.

Many people are still unaware of everything the library has to offer. While each library is different, a few unique things you can rent from my branch are fishing poles, puzzles and Wi-Fi To Go. And of course, most libraries have computers and printers, community boards to post advertisements and meeting rooms. Your library card will also give you free access to numerous online programs, such as language learning apps or homework help.

If that isn’t enough to make you want to step foot into a library, how about the atmosphere? Libraries are built on a culture of accessibility, freedom and innovation. We strive to accommodate the customer’s needs, whether it’s helping them find the perfect book to read or letting them know about the benefits of our reading programs (where, often, you can get free books or mugs). We encourage learning of all kinds and do our best to create an inviting and resourceful environment that people want to come back to.

So if you haven’t visited a library lately, why don’t you try it out? You might be surprised at what you’ll discover. Or perhaps, just like the libraries of old, you’ll simply find a new book to enjoy tonight.
