TMZ along with ABC News anchor report false information involving helicopter crash that killed NBA LA Lakers superstar, Kobe Bryant, daughter Gianna, and seven others. How this misinformation caused chaos in the media in the first few hours of reporting.

It was with heavy hearts that reporters broke the news of the death of NBA star Kobe Bryant at the age of 41. It was even more difficult to learn that his daughter, 13-year old Gianna had been among the other seven victims who passed away. The others, who were also in the helicopter were: John Altobelli, 56; Keri Altobelli, 46; Alyssa Altobelli, 13; Christina Mauser, 38; Ara Zobayan, 50; Sarah Chester, 45; and Payton Chester, 13.

TMZ had been the first to cover the story early on Sunday morning. In fact, the news broke so early that many on social media did not believe its accuracy and the families involved had not even been informed of the news prior to TMZ’s report.

ABC News anchor, Matt Gutman, had also reported an inaccurate statement which resulted in his suspension. His error was to state that all four of Bryant's daughters were in the helicopter the morning of the crash.

It is important that the public is made aware of breaking news in a reasonable and adequately timely manner. Today's news is built to deliver shock value, devastating and informative, but it has to be accurate and based on honorable facts. As journalists, we pride ourselves in knowing we did a job well, including maintaining timeliness; this pressure could lead to jumping the gun on facts and could cause more harm than good. The sadness that comes from the news of Bryant's passing is a difficult pill to swallow. If we want to earn our reader's trust and our own nobility, we must make right our wrongs and be willing to admit that, sometimes, journalists get the facts wrong.
