Let's Rise Above Partisanship and Fund the Border Wall

Providing for the security of our nation's borders should never cause the federal government to shut down.

As an objective observer of US politics, I’m always quick to call out hypocrisy, immorality, and unprincipled partisanship on both sides of the aisle. However, regarding our current government shutdown, Democrats are solely guilty of these practices. This is because, of all the issues on which Democrats and Republicans routinely disagree, funding for building the border wall, which should have bipartisan support, is the issue preventing Democrats from approving next year’s budget.

Any citizen of a nation state should see it to be in his/her best interest to maintain a safe and secure border that protects against foreign invasion. In fact, I have not heard a single politician or average citizen claim that he/she is in favor of illegal immigration; however, without adequate physical barriers, illegal immigration is inevitable. Democrats are keenly aware of this fact and use it to their advantage.

Democrats’ resistance to protecting our borders succeeds because of clever rhetoric. Democrats preach about the immorality of shutting down our border to immigrants seeking a better life for themselves and their families. Of course, this ignores the distinction between legal and illegal immigration, along with having an impenetrable border with ports of entry and one with no ports of entry.

However, these nuances are lost to many in the general population, with Democrats succeeding in convincing far too many voters that Trump’s proposed wall symbolizes an ongoing attempt to seal off the United States from the rest of the world on the basis of hatred, bigotry and/or lack of compassion towards immigrants. In reality, Republican politicians aren’t opposed to lawful immigration or immigrants and are undeserving of these baseless charges.

Moreover, hypocrisy runs deep on the Democrat side of the aisle. In 2006, Democrats and Republicans easily agreed on the Secure Fencing Act, which ordered 600 miles of fencing to be erected on the US-Mexican border. Among those who voted for it were Senators Schumer, Clinton, and Obama, who now wholeheartedly oppose this idea in the Trump era.

The fact that Trump made the border wall a staple issue of his campaign and branded it as his own, unlike any of his Republican opponents, means Democrats must oppose it at all costs – regardless of what their personal positions on the wall happen to be.

Party politics should not dictate whether or not our borders are to be secure - nation states have a sovereign responsibility to protect their borders, regardless of the system of government or political ideology that defines them.

In the US, it’s unconstitutional to fail on this obligation. Article four, section four of the Constitution states: “The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive…against domestic Violence.”

As such, Democrats must rise above partisan politics and fulfill our constitutional duty to protect our borders and, by extension, the citizens of our great nation.
