Learning About Affliliate Marketing

I've been invited to cover a big conference in Las Vegas dedicated to the subject of affiliate marketing. It's called Affiliate Summit West. Let's learn together.

I really don't know much about affiliate marketing.

In a nutshell, the basic idea is this: If you publish a website, like we do here at, you can invite affiliate marketers to advertise on your site.

If a site visitor clicks on an ad and actually goes on to buy something from the affiliate marketer, the affiliate marketer pays the website publisher a commission.

This is of great interest to THE LATEST, because, like any business, we need to figure out how to monetize.  Running a content site is hard; you need huge site traffic in order for the tiny fractions of a penny-per-impression to add up.

It might be possible, as we grow our traffic, for us to start generating revenue via affiliate marketing.  So I signed up to attend and cover Affiliate Summit West (ASW).

Right away, I started receiving messages from affiliate marketers who will be in attendance.  ASW uses a pretty cool matchmaking service called that facilitates communication between like-minded attendees.

My first inquiry came from Fellipe Oliveira of FlexOffers provides ads on any and all topics.

I look forward to learning more about FlexOffers, as covers so many topics.  THE LATEST, we think, is the best news aggregator ever built.  We show all topics -- and all sides -- all in one place.  We are completely neutral when it comes to politics.

I think it would be very cool if we could show golf ads on our golf page, car ads on our car page, tech ads on our tech page, etc.

Right now, the ads you see are based on your personal clicking history.  So the ads you see on and the ads I see on are very different -- but often not related to the content on the page

I hope we can address this soon.

I also got an inquiry from Aidan Ireland of  RethinkMyTherapy helps those with mental health issues connect with professionals who can help them.

So, for example, you have substance abuse issues, you can "e-meet" counselors who specialize in this topic and, once you find a counselor you like, you can enter therapy via video chats or phone calls for just $60 a month. This could be revolutionary, I think.

So don't be surprised if you see ads for on our site soon enough.

As part of our monetization quest, will soon offer private label news feeds on any and all topics.

The news feeds we produce will appear on someone else's site, via what's called an API (or widget).

Here's an example of one of our news feeds, on the topic of entertainment:

At ASW, I'll be looking for advertisers who might want to advertise inside our news feeds.

I'd also like to find a company that can help us market our news feeds.  It's ALL very high tech these days -- and I'm a print dinosaur!

More info to come in a week or so!
