It's almost that time. One more preseason game and the NFL will be ready to kick off another exciting season. On the Thursday after Labor Day, the defending champion Rams will host the league's top-ranked contender, the Bills. After that, we will be in just a blizzard of frenzied September football action. Catch your breath for a moment. We still have time to ponder the fate of our favorite teams.

The NFL owns America's favorite spectator sport. Right now, serious football fans are following preseason performance and speculating on which unfortunate players will get cut on Monday. Looking ahead to the regular season, pundits are already predicting various individual player records and team playoff scenarios.

On Tuesday, I will add my two cents. Since we have already seen key players injured, there is no advantage to predicting anything until after the last second of the last preseason game. But for now, we can study where things are. Some teams are looking like the cream of the crop, while others just look like toast.

There have been huge changes since the final whistle in February. The Seahawks lost Russell Wilson — half of the Hawk offense — and the state of Arizona's offense is in question. That means the NFC West division battle could be simply between the Rams and 49ers.

The Eagles and Cowboys have a slightly easier schedule than the average NFL team, so both NFC East teams could make the playoffs — for a change.

The Super Bengals now own the AFC North, and we'll see if Lamar Jackson and the Ravens can bounce back.

Breaking news: the Bucs are no longer a lock to win their division. Yes, Tom Brady has un-retired, but their offensive line is in question, the Saints have Jameis Winston back, and the Falcons have improved their roster substantially.

The Colts nabbed veteran QB Matt Ryan and are now poised to contend for it all — the division and the AFC championship. The Titans still have a super defense, but I question their offense. Still, I see both teams making the playoffs.

Josh Allen and the Bills now own the AFC East, but we have to keep an eye on Dem Dolphins, who made big moves in free agency.  The Patriots are a solid team, as well.

The Packers are still potent without Devante Adams and may have the benefit of playing in the weakest division (the North took that distinction away from the NFC East). The Lions continue to creep up by adding player talent, but the Vikings and Bears are even more in rebuilding mode.

More Breaking news: The Chiefs are no longer a lock to win the AFC West, even with Patrick Mahomes, one of the league's brightest stars. The Raiders will now have Devante Adams and Darren Waller on the same field, which should frighten fans of opposing teams. Derrick Carr has to be ecstatic. The Chargers and Broncos are also talented teams, but I think the Raiders are the best of that division.

Things can change quickly. After Sunday, it's time for players, teams, and commentators like me to "put your money where your mouth is."

But we fans should take a chill pill because all is well. Win or lose, there will be fall football in America. As always, it will be the best part of the season.
