It's Time to Arm Teachers and Staff in our Schools

The safest and most compassionate measure against school shootings is to empower those in charge to fight back.

With two school shootings in two different parts of the country happening within three months of each other, these atrocities cannot continue.

How many innocent students and staff have to die before we dispense with the idea that schools should be "gun-free zones"? This question sounds paradoxical until you realize that gunmen, like the ones in Parkland and Santa Fe, need to be met with equally powerful weapons to be stopped. Unfortunately, one of the most likely places to find a large group of people confined in one area without weapons to stop these madmen is a school filled with children.

Seen this way, schools may be the easiest target for those looking to shoot and kill as many people as possible. It follows that schools should be one of the most heavily defended public institutions; yet they are one of the least defended. These mass shootings are indicative of a national problem that requires a swift and practical solution that the political Left simply cannot and will not provide.

Short of confiscating every gun in the United States and banning production and sales, the only tenable solution to this problem is to arm teachers, staff, and guards. Our government has the obligation to ensure that our students - who are required to attend school - are protected to the best of the schools' ability.

The reason why such a solution has not been implemented is because the Left, who is winning the political debate over gun control, has no understanding about what the roots of the problem actually are. The problem isn’t the type of weapon being used: semi-automatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns alike have the ability to kill a massive number of people.

The problem also isn’t that it's too easy for Americans to acquire guns. Although background checks are necessary to prevent violent criminals and deranged individuals from buying guns, people with mental health issues and sinister intentions will always slip through the cracks from time to time and be able to obtain a gun.

To solve the problem, we need to deal with individuals, not guns. Our healthcare system can certainly be improved upon in terms of identifying those with mental health issues, treating them effectively, and re-assimilating them into society. However, as with background checks, the system isn’t perfect. Bad apples will always slip through the cracks of these barriers and wreak havoc.

The best method to deal with individuals who are potential mass murderers is to have the means to check them at the point of attack. Even just one armed teacher or staff member would increase the odds that the assailant will cause limited or no damage. Moreover, it would serve as a possible deterrent to that person even entering the building with intentions to kill. The only safe and practical way to combat gun crime is to fight fire with fire: neutralize the threat swiftly to ensure that as little blood is shed as possible.
