Is This Trump's "Nixon Goes to China" Moment?

Trump basically came out in favor of gun control today, much to the glee of Democrats -- and consternation from the GOP and its NRA backers.

Donald Trump came out today for lifting the age limit on gun purchases, getting rid of the "bump stock" upgrade, taking guns away from the mentally ill (even without due process) and possibly getting rid of automatic rifles.

Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow.

Who would have predicted this?  It would be easy to say "nobody I know," but that wouldn't be true.

A friend of mine, David Webster, just the other day said Trump had a "Nixon goes to China" opportunity to do something dramatic here.

David, an attorney from Chicago with a great sense of history, didn't hold out much hope that it would happen, but he saw the opening.  He even wrote Trump's hypothetical speech.  It was amazing.

Of course, Trump made a big deal out of saving DACA a while back, only to let it all slip away in the days immediately following.

Clearly that could happen in this case, too.

But let's try and imagine for a moment: What if Donald Trump is the guy who finally restores gun sanity to America?

I'd say that's a big one -- one for the history books, truly.

The NRA was a huge backer of Trump and many in the GOP.  If Trump does this, he is facing down a power nobody has ever really successfully bucked.

It's hard to imagine any other Republican or Democratic leader who could pull off such a feat in today's climate of maximum toxicity -- other than Donald Trump.

For those too young to know, Richard Nixon -- a staunch anti-communist -- opened up relations with China in the 1970s.  People -- including his Republican supporters -- were quite speechless at first.  It was so unexpected.

The NRA is now squealing.  It never occurred to me I'd ever hear such a sound in my lifetime. This gun evil has been with us a long time.

In my youth, JFK, Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King were gunned down.

But this isn't -- or shouldn't be -- a partisan issue. George Wallace, a total right winger, got shot in that same time period.

Later some nut cases shot at Republicans Jerry Ford and Ronald Reagan.  Reagan almost didn't make it.

John Lennon of The Beatles was gunned down by yet another nut.

WAY too many people got shot over the years, starting long before the sixties and continuing to this day, 50 years later.

In several big cities, hundreds per year die of gunshot wounds.  You don't hear much about these unknowns.  They aren't politicians or rock stars.

Over time, we have became numb to it all. Nothing ever changed, we began to give up.

Here's to the kids at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

You cried out.  We heard you.  And maybe the president just did, as well.

We have finally been snapped out of our slumber.

Stay the course, Donald, stay the course.

And yes -- THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS that our country is finally taking this seriously.

See out there on the streets on the 24th.
