With the introduction of social media, our ways to communicate and modes of living have been revolutionized. Now the question arises: has social media negatively affected our generation? Do its disadvantages outweighs its advantages?

In the 21st century, social media is used vastly, and almost every individual of every age group has access to it. In the past 20 years, interactions between human beings have changed. Social media platforms aren't merely used for networking anymore. Instead, people now use it to communicate with each other on a global scale. Through the various platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, and Facebook, communication between people has revolutionized. Social media has adverse effects on an individual, and those damaging effects are long-lasting if it is used obsessively.

Cyber-bullying is an ever-growing phenomenon, and no matter how much we speak out about it, it is not something that will stop anytime soon. It shows through a study that YouTube, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are some of the platforms associated with body image issues, and bullying, along with anxiety and depression.

Social media is such a contrivance that has profoundly impacted the way we value ourselves. People continuously seek validation and approval through the number of likes they get on a picture and their number of followers. Because of that, many people suffer from low self-esteem. It is usual for a person to compare his life to someone he sees online. But he doesn't realize that the lives people portray virtually are nothing but a mere projection of what they wish to display. The online world is just an illusion; no one posts about their insecurities and failures. They only post what they want others to see.

It is not uncommon for sexual predators to create duplicate profiles on social media and hide their true selves behind a screen. A recent report by Facebook indicated that the estimated amount of duplicate accounts are at eleven percent of the active users per month, which is around 275 million. Simultaneously, there are 137 million fake user profiles, about five percent of the total accounts. The fake accounts are used by online predators to lure underaged children to meet them.

Often, children meet them without realizing the consequences it can lead to. People can portray their profile in whichever way they want. It is not difficult to make an account and upload pictures of someone you're not. Creating a new account is just a click away, and many online predators take advantage of social media and trap innocent children.

Despite its detrimental effects, social media has many positive aspects to it as well. If used correctly, social media can influence a person's life in the best possible way. Just like everything else, one must not use social media in an excessive amount. Social media is impacting our generation in the worst possible way. It is an issue that we need to shed light upon more and keep in mind the problems that might come with social media addiction and how badly it can affect one's interpersonal communication with the world and diminish their mental health.
