Is Rickie Fowler Finally Going to Win a Major?

Probably not, unfortunately. But here's to hoping.

Rickie Fowler had an historic first round, shooting seven under par, matching the US Open record previously held by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf. The problem is he's only in the lead by one stroke.

This year's US Open is being held at the Erin Hills golf course in Erin, WI, and it's pretty easy. Well, at least until it gets hard. You see, the fairways are enormous, so most of the contenders are hitting them without issue. The problem is, if you miss, you end up in what's called "fescue" -- basically, two-foot-tall grass.

So as long as players continue hitting the gigantic fairways, they'll shoot incredibly low scores. But the ones who have missed (and that includes greats like McIlroy and Day) can rack up strokes really quickly.

Fowler hit 12 of 14 fairways yesterday, and made it to the green in regulation on 15 of the 18 holes. He had seven birdies and 11 pars. He had a really good day! The problem is, that's significantly better than his previous performances this year.

Now, there's nothing saying he can't keep it up, and despite his middle-of-the-road accuracy from the tee this year, he does have those huge fairways working in his favor. But Fowler has performed well at Major championships before, and has yet to come away with a win. He has five top-five finishes in Majors (four of those five coming at each 2014 Major). He's even led the field on a Sunday. But as of yet, he's always come up short.

I'm rooting for Rickie Fowler. He strikes me as a very down to earth guy despite his colorful outfits (which are fly as the sky). I hope he can hang on to the lead, but it's going to be difficult. It feels like one of those he-won't-make-it-till-he-makes-it type of situations. But he's eventually going to make it, and who's to say this won't be the one.

Here's to hoping Fowler gets to raise the trophy Sunday after a win as electrifying as his bluest of pants.
