Injuries Have Changed The Game

The NFL's extreme parity, combined with this weird coronavirus season, is causing more injuries than we have ever seen after just two weeks of play.

I coined the expression "extreme parity" a couple of years ago to describe the fact that the NFL has the best team parity in all of professional team sports. In 2020, I suspect that we will soon have few undefeated teams. But injuries are also wreaking havoc.

Here are just a few of the major injuries that are plaguing teams:

  1. Colts: RB Marlon Mack
  2. Falcons: DE Tak McKinley and WR Julio Jones
  3. 49ers: DE Nick Bosa and QB Jimmy Garoppolo
  4. Giants: RB Saquon Barkley
  5. Packers: WR Davante Adams
  6. Panthers: RB Christian McCaffrey and QB Teddy Bridgewater
  7. Saints: WR Michael Thomas.

I think that injuries are up due to lack of practice and preseason games.

My Week Two record was 11-5.  Looking ahead, these are my Week Three picks:

        Away               Home           My Pick
1.     Dolphins          Jaguars            Jaguars
2.     Texans             Steelers           Steelers
3.     Bengals           Eagles              Eagles
4.     49ers               Giants              49ers
5.     Raiders            Patriots           Raiders
6.     Titans              Vikings             Titans
7.     Washington    Browns            Browns
8.     Rams               Bills                 Rams
9.     Bears               Falcons            Falcons
10.  Panthers          Chargers          Chargers
11.  Jets                  Colts                Colts
12.  Cowboys         Seahawks        Cowboys
13.  Bucs                Broncos           Bucs
14.  Lions                Cardinals         Cardinals
15.  Packers            Saints              Packers
16.  Chiefs              Ravens            Ravens

About 10 of these games are what I would consider “must-see”, but there are a handful of true blockbusters on the schedule, and this is how I see them.

The Raiders are looking super tough right now.  I expect Darren Waller to have another big day, and the Raider defense should provide just enough toughness to stave off Cam Newton and the Patriots.

I don’t know who is scarier right now — Jared Goff or Josh Allen, two QBs playing at the top of their games. With these two teams having excellent defenses, I suspect the play of other offensive stars will determine the outcome. I like Robert Woods and the Rams to edge Stephon Diggs and the Bills.

I think Russell Wilson is a better QB than Dak Prescott, but I think the Cowboys have a slightly better offensive scheme and more reliable running attack, which is why I’m taking the Cowboys over the Seahawks.

Another one of toughest choices I faced this week was the Lions and the Cardinals. I think the Lions and Falcons are the two winless teams with the most impressive offenses and defenses — and the most likely to break their winless streaks. However, the Cardinals are absolutely on fire, and I’m not sure the Lions have an answer for Kyler Murray. Does anyone?

I think the injury-plagued Saints have lost more offensive punch than the beat-up Packers. That, plus the stellar play of Aaron Rodgers made my decision relatively easy.

The game of the week — the Chiefs and Ravens — could certainly go either way, but I have a funny feeling that the Ravens are going to bring a little more energy to this showdown between top rivals.

This weekend of football should be a blast.
