2019: Let's Make America Proud Again

Integrity isn’t a partisan issue – or it shouldn’t be, anyway.

Donald Trump was, of course, the big story of 2018 – just as he was in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

He will be the big story of 2019, as well.  He will see to that.

But how will this story play out in 2019?

I feel it could go in one of three directions, with an equal likelihood attached to each outcome:

1)    More bad stuff will be revealed and the American people will eventually say “enough!”  Trump quits, gets indicted or – less likely – gets impeached.  Whatever happens, Trump will make sure he and members of his family get pardoned by Mike Pence.

2)    There will be a continuation of the “new normal”: government by tweet, ongoing chaos, plenty of blame and name-calling – with no breakthrough in sight.  We will stagger into 2020, exhausted.

3)    Donald Trump will finally decide to act “presidential.”  It might be too late.

I see signs of hope.  Here is some evidence that the pendulum started to swing back in 2018:

- The Parkland School kids vented some righteous anger about gun violence that has been missing from the scene for far too long.

- The #MeToo Movement seemed to appear out of nowhere, and yet, looking back on things, it’s amazing this uprising didn’t begin decades ago.

- The John McCain and George H.W. Bush funeral speeches revealed that most really do want to see a return to civility in our public discourse.

- I was especially encouraged by the judge who recently slammed Michael Flynn for selling out his country in a way that might viewed as treason.  Judge Emmet Sullivan’s harsh words seemed unusual because they were so clear – in contrast to what has become acceptable in today’s climate of moral fogginess.

- Some Democrats in New Jersey recently tried to follow in the footsteps of Republicans and gerrymander the hell out of election districts in an attempt to give Democrats the advantage.  But quite a few Democrats across the land yelled “hell, no.”  It’s about time someone put integrity over personal gain.

- A few Republicans – but not nearly enough – are beginning to question Trump.

- While cable TV and social media seem stuck in the mud, mainstream media is trying to regain its footing, with a renewed commitment to old-time journalistic values.

- In an era of fake everything, Robert Mueller seems very real.  Let’s hope nobody tries to stop him.  It’s time for truth, honor and integrity to win – and in a decisive way.

At THE LATEST, we pledge to stay focused on political neutrality, providing a forum for a healthy exchange of ideas.  It’s time we started talking again.
