How to Prevent Getting Robbed

Dig an escape tunnel.

While traveling through the California Mother Lode, State Highway 49, I stopped in Sonora, California to have something to eat and heard an interesting story about a merchant who always got robbed, and how he stopped the robberies.

This merchant always put his money which he earned that day, into a small leather bag. He stuck the bag in his pant pocket. Then he closed the front, wooden doors of his shop, pulled a metal screen around the front of the store, locked it and then started to walk home. After a few steps he would hear a voice saying, "Give me the money and don’t turn around."

This was the third time in three weeks he was robbed walking home from work. These robberies, he said to himself, have to stop. But how? After several days of considering the problem, he came up with a wild idea that seemed to work. Dig an escape tunnel.

For several months, no one ever saw him enter or leave the store. But, when they went into the store to buy something, the owner was always there. The question was: How did he get into the store with out being seen entering or leaving?

He lived right behind the store, so he had a tunnel dug from the back of the store to his house and used it every day to go to work and to come home.

As long he owned the store, he was never robbed again.
