How Coronavirus Impacted Me

The traditions that I've ecstatically anticipated for the past four years have been canceled, but I'm trying to make the most of the situation.

Like many high school seniors, I recently learned that my boarding school is closed for the rest of the year due to COVID-19. Classes will be conducted online, but long-awaited traditions such as prom and graduation have been canceled.

In addition to feeling robbed of these lifelong memories, I am wrestling with a sense of incompletion. Students received the news of online school when we were already on spring break. As a result, I didn’t get to process that my high school experience was ending. I remember my last day at school starkly – I rolled out of bed, turned in my history paper, went to the gym, and headed to the airport soon after. Little did I know that those were my final few moments on campus.

Of course, I am disappointed that I won’t get to go to prom or walk across the stage at graduation. However, the most upsetting part is that I didn’t get to say goodbye to any of my friends or teachers. So many people impacted me positively throughout the past four years. It hurts not to have had the chance to say goodbye.

At the same time, I am keeping things in perspective. COVID-19 has taken lives, jobs, and severely harmed the economy. In comparison, losing senior spring seems like a small price to pay.

Coronavirus is another reminder of the fragility of life. Despite our technological progress, humans are ultimately mortal and will succumb to nature. Today, a virus originating from deceased wild animals has driven the world into fear. Tomorrow, it might be an earthquake or flood.

I have learned that I cannot take things for granted. Last trimester, I worked hard to maintain my grades. I  stressed unnecessarily over percentage points, telling myself that I could relax during senior spring. Now I'm sitting at home regretting not having spent more time enjoying school.

Looking forward, I am going to make the most of my time in self-quarantine. I aim to get fit by completing Chloe Ting’s 28 day ab challenge. I have made it through the first five days and will hopefully see results within a month. I am supplementing my abdominal workout with intense arm and leg strength building.

I'm also honing my calligraphy skills. Art has always been an important emotional outlet for me, so I'm happy to have more time to practice.

Whenever I feel down about losing the best part of high school, I think back to the letter Chris Dyer addressed to high school seniors across the country. "If there is any group that can plow through this in creative ways, it is your group," he wrote. "There is no pandemic strong enough to silence you or dent the passion of your generation. Keep your head up and keep fighting. Our country needs you because you provide hope for our future. This year may not be what you envisioned, but I’m eager to see what you do with it."
