Healthcare: Let's Get Practical

Everyone knows our healthcare system is broken. Let's set aside ideology and just come up with something that actually works.

I am not a doctor.  Nor am I a healthcare expert.

But we now know our healthcare system is vastly inefficient.  How many times am I mailed complicated-looking documents from my health insurer -- documents that look like bills -- only to be told they really aren't bills.  If they aren't bills, why send them to me?

I have no issue with rich people being able to buy fabulous health insurance or even having their own private doctors.

Low income people need the basics, and we need to figure out a way to pay for it.

But there will be some inequality in the system, and I think that's OK.  Otherwise, what's the point of being rich?

But America has been the land of opportunity for a nice long time now, so I think the rich should be willing to shoulder more of the healthcare bill here.

But why do we need all these insurance companies as our middleman?  Seems to me we should have a single payer system for those who can't afford insurance and then layer in all kinds of great plans for those who can.

Obama probably wanted something along these lines, but in order to gain support of Republicans, he kept the insurance companies in the mix.  But that wasn't good enough.

Now, after seven years of complaining, we see the Republicans are divided over all this.  Maybe that's because everyone is fighting to make some kind of ideological statement rather than focusing on simply coming up with a system that works.

It's time to get practical!

Other countries have figured this out and the citizens often really like their country's system.  Why not start by reviewing these successful systems as our starting place?

Again, this would be for those who can't afford insurance.  The rich can take care of themselves with whatever add-on plans they like.
